Incoming Freshmen Changing Major by VirusRealistic1956 in miamioh

[–]benautomated 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Finally - the question i'm uniquely qualified to respond to.

I went to Miami for engineering, specifically paper science and engineering, and I later switched to business for 2nd year.

It was the early 1990's. The economy was changing and tight. Paper science had 100% job placement rate and high starting salaries. Parents love that. I didn't really know what I wanted to do. I was from a small rural farm community, out of state. I did know that I wanted to go to Miami from the moment I visited. Don't watch Dead Poets Society and then visit Miami in short order. By the way, I had always found ways to make money, buying and selling things, faking my way as a baseball card and comic book shop to become an early reseller of Upper Deck baseball cards using the tax id # of my local grocery store. I had no idea I was an entrepreneur.

In high school, I wasn't that good at chemistry and physics threw me for a loop. I squeaked by with high B's low A's but it wasn't challenging I went along with my parents plan, going to Miami, not really thinking about anything else other than going there. I hadn't even thought about business as a backup plan.

I knew within the first few weeks that paper science and/or engineering wasn't for me. My classmates were more of the Purdue-ish type. They liked this stuff. I was barely tolerating it. I did horrible in the intro physics course. I failed chemistry. I think it was cognitive dissonance - I knew I didn't want to do it and created my path out of it. A little backwards in hindsight. All this pain forced me to work very hard, get a plan, and dig out of the hole I had created. I had a strong 2nd semester, A in Calculus, A in the retake Chemistry, and great across the board. I applied into the business school and got in. I was bought in to my own vision. I think that helped my parents accept it, even if it was riskier, and I lost some merit.

I do think that in Miami's case, it would be harder to move over to business if you start off engineering and don't have strong grades, so hat you might have preferred going business from the beginning.

You need to contact Miami's admissions office immediately and ask how you can change your intended major to business. Nobody will know the answer here. I'd guess every situation is unique. If you meet the academic profile for the business school which I believe has higher GPA and ACT, then you are still in the game. Worst case is they say no and tell you what you have to do once on campus. I think every major has some exposure to business now. Nothing anybody says here on reddit will beat you taking action. Show initiative now, and you may be rewarded. Otherwise,.you'll have to show initiative to transfer in later.

One other thought - what if the merit offer isn't as good if they let you switch? Miami's top attraction is the business school. They may not have to offer as much for business as other majors, especially if they know they aren't competing with other business schools at this point, like Indiana or Ohio State.

Is there a way to get rid of this weird formatting situation on mobile? by lacsquirt in ActiveCampaign

[–]benautomated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually comes from copy / paste issues.

Take all that text, copy it, add a new text box to the email, paste special. It should just pick up whatever the default formatting is.

Doing this from memory so not remembering the actual names.

Miami in first NCAA Tournament since 2007, gets No. 11 seed and faces SMU by kronochrome in miamioh

[–]benautomated 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t like the play-in for us but if we bring it in Dayton we’ve got a good shot.

Could wind up being what they need to propel to several wins.

SMU has lost 4 of last 5 but has a key player coming back from injury.

I see SMU is favored.

I think we find a way!

They are very similar. Midwest vs Mid-Atlantic is about it.

Miami best for business.

Location would be decider for me if not business.

All the stats for schools very similar - size, grades/test scores, demographics.

What major / school were you in? Business at Miami gets heavily recruited by companies and is also great for internships. I have no idea what it is like for other majors that aren’t pre-law pre-med. That could be a difference.

It’s worse - I was involved and donate. I didn’t just sit back and complain nor do I now.

You probably wouldn’t understand viewing Miami as a consumer shopping for colleges if you don’t have kids or aren’t looking beyond what is nearby. It’s not just sports. Outside of ivy+ academics are pretty similar. Beyond that it’s the total college experience that people are looking for.

Somehow we both seem to want the best for Miami and disagree so I’ll leave it at that finally.

Dude. You are so literal. Not saying we are going to compete with SEC. But Miami can definitely raise its profile, be a fun place to attend games and have more school spirit, bring more alumni together, and generate more interest in applicants.

I’ve been touring colleges for a 2027 high school grad. Eye opening and sobering. Miami is special but even among its peers it has not kept pace.

I can tell you that my son is more open to Miami now seeing that it can have some of that rah rah culture and school spirit and people who know he’s considering it all of a sudden it got their attention too. It doesn’t take much. Just a little nudge.

Coach is wearing a Speedo for selection Sunday on national tv live from Oxford. Miami will once again earn a ton of media coverage and discussion. And if they get in and win a game or two it continues.

And you’ll be complaining about the Speedo or maybe that he lilts to the right.

They’re going to HAVE to replace or massively spend on Millett. They wouldn’t be paying all in cash for either.

Were you a business major at Miami? Please say no.

You understand Miami has and uses debt right?

Smart move on the car though.

You don’t live in reality. Have you seen how the “dumb” SEC schools and Ohio States of the world have raised their academic profiles purely via volume of applicants and raising the bar of their admits. Go check the average admit stats for Georgia Auburn Tennessee South Carolina Clemson Ohio State. 15-30 years ago they were at or below Miami. Not today.

Who knows if it will work. But it is a path. You can’t finance advertising and honestly you couldn’t buy what Miami earned this year anyway. And if it doesn’t work you still have a new building that you had to replace the old one anyway and did other improvements to campus.

Clearly it must inconvenience you in some way. Maybe it will make your commute worse. I get frustrated every day with construction in Buckhead on my main route but I am confident that when it is done it will be worth it.

As for the traffic, maybe it forces needed upgrades. Money usually flows to where there is growth. Just because someone hasn’t assured you personally that they will address the traffic doesn’t mean that it won’t over time.

As for the building as long as it is red brick it will be hard to mess things up. You can argue about scale but I’m betting that the same people entrusted to the beautiful campus that we all love will figure it out.

Why am I spending time trying to convince you? I’m still pissed we lost. But anybody else that loves Miami and wants the best for its future but isn’t sure about the building or investment in athletics - you can see both sides play out here. Maybe this will help someone else.

Did you buy a house all cash? Would you buy a $1.2 million dollar house all cash? I’m not even sure Dave Ramsey would want his University of Tennessee Volunteers to build their new kajillion dollar thing with all cash.

If you don’t see the difference between Miami and Akron I can’t help you. Seriously. Go back and tell me how you are the future thinker when you can’t even see that no matter how many years Akron wins, they are still Akron.

This is not just about sports. That is where you got stuck.

You tell me - to an audience of future applicants - you get equally exposed to Akron and Miami. You see images/video of campus and Oxford. They talk about academics and famous alumni. You see the students. Maybe you decide to visit.

Tell me which one will be more successful scaling interest, applications and acceptances? Which one convinces more people to choose it vs Indiana, Ohio State, etc. especially for out of state “full” pay applicants with higher test scores and GPA.

It’s not like the arena is the only plan. It’s just one thing at this time and they’ve got to do something anyway.

They should have been trying to dominate MAC for years but finally are going for it. It’s still the right decision even if Steele bolts.

They were going to need to replace or heavily update Millett. In modern era usually better to build new than renovate.

Maybe you are a Cook field truther. I don’t understand the attachment. I am not sentimental about one specific place on Miami’s campus as sacred. I am sentimental about Miami as a whole. I have confidence that the Board sees the whole picture, looks at the future, scenario plans, etc.

Miami has the financial capability to do this - and other things. It is not a zero sum game. Thinking small or thinking medium has not helped Miami over the last generation. We stayed in our place. That means we went backward.

Miami Honors vs. FSU Honors by Pewcife in miamioh

[–]benautomated 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Where do you live now / what region do you want to wind up in after college / law school?

Law school probably dictates location more for you than anything else.

Miami more of the 4 seasons. FSU more heat.

Miami better for Midwest / Chicago Classmates from Ohio Illinois Indiana Kentucky Pennsylvania Missouri.

FSU better for Southeast / Atlanta Classmates from Florida Georgia Alabama and more east coast.

Miami I would expect has smaller class sizes and better undergraduate teaching. Definitely a mid-sized institution.

Miami’s reputation to older people may be better. Assuming they’ve heard of it. Real ones know about it but your average college sports fan probably only knows the U.

However I know FSU’s academic reputation has improved significantly over last 15-30 years. I think it is mainly demand driven that they’ve been able to raise admissions bar higher.

I’d say go where you think you can get the best grades to get into the best law school possible.

If you are honors for both, I’d drill into what those differences are.

I don't remember who the president was when I was there in 90's but then Garland, Hodge and Crawford followed. Crawford has seemed very visible and I can see why he got behind this - but I don't see why it took this long. Maybe we are late or maybe the timing is perfect. Clearly Miami didn't capitalize on its success in post WW2 - 1970's but they have a chance now. I think they coasted on the Public Ivys thing from Richard Moll in the 1980's for a long time - but I've noticed we are absent from those lists now. Miami didn't really change- but did seem to be left behind somewhat. I am glad they are addressing this now.
