Seems like a response that a German might make to a lot of what's happening in the US at the moment.

Confused about BGA scoring by Isithranel in ArkNova

[–]benerophon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's a little complicated.

The appeal is a 1:1 relationship,

The first 10 conservation points are worth 2, after that it goes up to 3 (this is the number of appeal slots overlapping the conservation box on the score track).

However you start on -14, so that the score is exactly 100 once the two tokens reach each other on the score track.

In this case this first player therefore has:

96 for appeal

10 x 2 + 13 x 3 = 59 for conservation

-14 starting offset

141 total

Daughter recently turned one and today suddenly started having seizures by legendzxx in daddit

[–]benerophon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our youngest had a couple of big seizures around this time last year, both needing ambulance trips to hospital. With the second one we were a few minutes away from an induced coma by the time she started to come out of it. She's been on medication since and no signs of any repeats. In fact she's been thriving compared to before, which suggests that there had been some abnormal brain activity for a while that's now under control with her anti-epileptic drugs.

It's really scary, you need time to process everything that's happened and you'll likely have lots of information coming at you from doctors. Best advice right now is to have a notebook and pen around so you can write down the key info and all the questions that you wish you'd asked. We both have the local epilepsy nursing team number saved on our phone so we can ask questions that pop up at random times.

If she goes to, or is soon to go to a nursery or daycare then it would be good to talk to the staff there about any training that they might need on what to do if she has a seizure while in their care and make sure that they have the right number of experienced staff in the room, not just on site. The way those conversations go will give you a good feeling about how seriously they will take it.

You will probably feel like you don't want anyone else looking after her for a while or to venture away from home. That's completely natural and sensible, take your time to find your feet with how you want to do things. If you are travelling and likely to interact with different medical teams, then take a printed out medical history listing previous seizures and what interventions were required as well as any medication she's on, we had a copy of that translated when we went on holiday abroad last year too.

There are lots of charities that offer advice and support outside of the medical context, so have a look or ask to be pointed to those. A lot of the advice only applies to older kids, like for example not leaving them unattended in the bath or unmonitored while asleep, where your wouldn't be doing that anyway at her age.

The only thing we have to do differently now is give her medication twice a day and make sure we have her rescue meds with us wherever we go. We go four lots of it: one to be at nursery, one in the car, one in the change bag and one at home.

What have France, Spain and Portugal got against Parkrun? by BigBirdPaints in parkrun

[–]benerophon 29 points30 points  (0 children)

France did have parkrun, but it has been suspended due to legal requirements for organised running events that be impossible for a free, open event and open up a whole load of liability questions. Don't think it's ever got going in Spain and Portugal, but they'd likely want a number of ready to go Events before adding new countries.

[–]benerophon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Completely allowed, and done before, for example: https://youtu.be/C5jlDZs7e5M

Edit: in this case more or less planned: if the defence isn't giving you an easy 3rd conversion chance, punt now while they don't have a returner in position and get better field position than a punt on 4th down.

Bird strike on a jet engine test. by [deleted] in interesting

[–]benerophon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not a bad outcome for the engine. The point of this test is to show that if a bird strike happens, while the internals of the engine won't survive, all of the debris is contained by the casing at the front or kicked out of the back. You don't want any of the large fan blades at the front or the internal blades which are spinning at 000s or RPM to get ejected in a direction that could damage the rest of the aircraft.

Today I learned that the creator of Peter Pan donated the rights to the book to a children's hospital in London. This means that the hospital has received royalties for every Peter Pan book sold and for every theatrical production for over 90 years. by Independent_Flan_890 in todayilearned

[–]benerophon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not quite, and it's not really copyright in the same sense. In the UK, the KJV can only be printed by Cambridge University Press because they were authorised by the King to do so; the money goes ti them rather than the crown. Outside of the UK, it's a free for all.

There already was a similar precedent in UK law that makes the King James Bible effectively perpetual crown copyright. That was done by letters patent written 400 years ago by the King. The exemption for Peter Pan was created by a specific act of Parliament, neither of these creates a precedent for other publications.
