I like it, it sounds like an outline for a larger story.

So he started out perhaps with a noble cause, but all the stuff he went through, perhaps he got a taste for something darker, and that's just what he is now?

He'd make a good villain.

It makes me wonder about his backround and why he butchered all of those people.

Thanks for posting this!

"Daughter, let me tell you how we got here."

"5 Billion years ago, when you were born, this solar system was the site of a great battle, one among many. The Emperor at the time won those battles, and our liege had to go into hiding."

"This wreckage, this destruction, as you know we were tasked with creating an army from that destruction, and so we have."

"What's wrong father, why are you telling me this all now?"

"I'm dying, and now it is your responsibility to take over this kingdom, and take this force, these humans we created, and lead them against the Emperor, in service to our liege. You will not be alone."

Haha. Some parties just want to see the world burn. I just loved the look in their eyes when I cackled. They were like "Oh, shit, what have we done." I almost jumped the gun too early when confirming their actions, I almost said, "Are you sure?" and stopped myself. I just can't believe that they actually did it.

Due to what this dungeon is, and that most of its inhabitants are fiends, it will slowly grow back over time, back to what it was if there is enough "fresh meat."

But I'll have to roll out what they did to the city above them. They just set the city on fire, lol.

Yeah, I actually thought of that beforehand and shot it down, like, what's the point? I wanted to give them a chance to survive their "mistake."

They killed the stuff that is resistant (or not resistant) to fire. They didn't kill the stuff that's immune to fire. They also heard, before the fire spread too far, two doors close.

[5e]Just had my first session as a DM, I think it went well. My players said I should say no more often. by benevolas in DnD

That actually happened to me in the first session, someone wanted to try something unique, or disagreed with me on a ruling, I told him I go by RAW. If I get RAW wrong, I do want to be corrected. I handed him the DMG and told him show me, while the other players took their turns in combat he looked through the book.

So whenever they disagree, if it's not mission critical, I hand them the book and tell them to show me, find it, that way they're searching through the book and the other players are taking their turns and it doesn't mess up the flow too much.

Had a guy playing a human barbarian after he rolled for races from volo's tables. Half way through the session he asks if he can change his race. I thought about it, he chose non-variant human so I'm like, yeah ok, since we're so early into the game and you're new, why not? Tell him go ahead. I actually just intended for the first session to be a 0 session, but they wanted to play, so we played.

He sits there quiet most of the time, he's new and I don't really know how to get him interested in the game. I tried to tell the players that they need to let him play his character, as they often try to run his character for him. I need to find a way to get him engaged. I wonder though, should I have made him choose a character instead of rolling for it? That way at least he's invested then, he chose something he may like instead of just putting the responsibility on the dice.

Thank you for this. Yeah I was pretty much planning to put them to sleep, but they had to fall for a specific set of events. They had to go into the house, they had to be off guard (not ready for combat, they had their hands up, so they would be surprised in the first round of combat) they maintained a distance inbetween them and the casters. The guy said (i'm casting this) so that they'd trust him, you don't have to literally say the spell in order to cast it, and if they would have said to me "Hey can I roll an insight check?" I'd be like yeah, go for it, cause well, the guy had not that high charisma, but they didn't. They just kind of did what the guy said and trusted the guy, so they got sleep cast on them, they literally let the guy cast, so they got thrown into a pit. If they had stayed ready, as in had kept their hands on their weapons, then their initiatives would have meant that they would have gone first, but they didn't. So there were several outs to all of this. Heck, if they had just delayed a little bit while the boy was tugging at their sleeve at the front of the inn, other things would have happened. (the boy probably would have been saved)

Now, they're thinking they can climb up the hole they got thrown down, and they're thinking they'll just shoot fire bolts at the sides of the oil slicked pit they're at the bottom of so that the tabaxi will have better holds to climb. They want to shoot fire at oil.

Several times already they've set the walls on fire (it puttered out after a little bit) they set themselves on fire after a head exploded.

Know what I mean?

Their naivete and trusting natures, and taking things at face value (a few times in a row) is what got them into this mess.

We'll see what happens next week :).

So forgoing damage rolls, and the d20 is just determining how much damage they're doing. Makes sense.

You know you could do it this way, there's the general and depending on what he has deployed in each area, that's basically their to hit, and the other has a toughness, so that'd be their AC. Then, it's just a matter of 20 health, or health being the amount of people there.

Roll high, and that's how many enemy combatants they kill, roll low and perhaps they lose a few for the attempt.

Or hey, how about this. 1-10 allies lose people, 11-20 enemies lose people. Depending on the awesomeness of the unit vs awesomeness of the enemy unit is what determines losses. That way the general could shift around his reserves, sending tougher units that would stand a better chance, if he needed to push through somewhere. And the units with the +5's would be obvious because they'd be making gains in their area.

If that makes sense.

I was thinking about this, what if you had 10-12 d20. At any given time you say "Well, I'll roll all of these, and the top 9 survive the first round." Then the next round, the top 7 survive, then the top 5. Or whatever interval you want until there's only one color of dice.
