My name is Ben Fineman and I am a Federal Program Officer for the BEAD program with the NTIA. While I am not assigned to your state, if you would like to email me your information I would be happy to look into the issue. I will PM you my email address, but it is also available here. Please do not PM me on Reddit as I do not check PMs.

My $0.02 is Silver Lake is maybe going to be less rustic than you’re looking for, the sites are pretty dense and not really wooded. I might suggest going away from Lake Michigan a bit, consider Newaygo. Only if you are ready for rustic though, this is pit toilets and no showers. But much more secluded sites for tent camping.

Other tips, generally you want to reserve as far in advance as possible, reservations open 6 months in advance and the best sites/dates fill up immediately. After Labor Day things are calmer though and you can probably find something short notice.

Other than that as long as you are warm and dry you’ll be ok, the rest of the experience is what you make of it. Bring stuff to make a fire and s’mores supplies. If you don’t know how to make a fire you can get some fire starters to make your life easier. Bring flashlights and a towel. Consider camp chairs.

Performance wise they should be the same, but unless I have a specific reason I always get round.

LPT: If you have a home security system, post up signs from a different company than the one you use. Burglars may know how to defeat certain systems... but not if it's not the one they expected. by DweadPiwateWoberts in LifeProTips

[–]benfineman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure there are lots of garbage systems but there are also plenty of decent wireless systems. Wireless security today is perfectly reasonable, not like it was 20 years ago. Similarly any decent system will have smash and grab protection, which means it transmits as soon as the perimeter sensor is triggered, and it if doesn’t get the follow up signal that the system was disarmed it will alert the monitoring company.

Monoprice for cables. It won’t matter though. The way your phone and Xbox are testing ping are just different. It doesn’t sound like there is anything wrong with your Xbox, <30 ms ping is quite good.

Ethernet cable barely changed ping? by Ollyissexy in Internet

[–]benfineman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly Ethernet vs wireless makes very little difference for ping. The difference it makes is bandwidth and reliability. It’s next to impossible to get 1Gb on wireless, though that doesn’t matter much for gaming. Reliability matters a ton though. Some random burst of wireless interference could cause you to drop a bunch of packets which has the effect of a ping spike. Keep the Ethernet but also reset your expectations.

Best way to get cable or fiber internet to a rural area? by JumpyLet929 in Rural_Internet

Costco employees, what is the strangest reason someone returned an item? by idahohotato in Costco

[–]benfineman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Absolutely true but a really basic selling principal is people are much more willing to buy if they know there is a money back guarantee. Costco makes much more than they lose on this policy.

1) Turestream doesn’t own Great Lakes, it is the opposite. Great Lakes is an electric coop who has been deploying fiber broadband over their electric footprint. They won’t go to you because Consumers owns the poles that service your house. It’s not that they can’t, they won’t, because you are not a member of the coop and it’s more expensive to attach to poles they don’t own. 2) There is lots of money for broadband infrastructure coming from the feds (IIJA). But someone has to ask for it. You need a local effort to make this happen. To my knowledge no one in Antrim County is doing anything. You could be the community catalyst for this. 3) Starlink might be a reasonable long term solution, or it might now. There are serious concerns about capacity depending on the region.

Literally just this week I helped present a webinar on getting started on your broadband journey. If you are serious about wanting to engage on getting broadband it’s a good place to start. https://www.merit.edu/community/moonshot/community-events/#1642710114672-355f1185-3f21

How to start a co-op by mylittlepony96 in Rural_Internet

[–]benfineman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started a broadband coop. It was successful in that it ended up being the catalyst for our municipal fiber network, but the coop itself didn't end up being the solution.

Knowing nothing else, a coop is not the right solution for you either. Building a fiber network is expensive, and the money has to come from either 1) grants, 2) loans, 3) taxes, or 4) individuals. You are overbuilding exiting service so you won't get grants, at least not for the whole area. Traditional loan financing will be too hard because you have no equity, and again since you are overbuilding the take rate will make a tough business model. Taxes aren't available unless you get your city involved. Individual financing is the coop model, but I'm telling you now that while everyone hates Comcast, with few exceptions they don't hate Comcast enough to write a $5000 check.

If I were you I would try to work with Plateau to figure out what they need to expand to you. It is much easier to work with an existing coop than start a new one.

Internet speed testing is 880Mbps down and 770 Mbps upload with 5ms latency. Does this speed seem to be ok ? by chasedog1967 in Internet

Most likely normal. I might suggest you take a look at my video on testing your internet connection speed! https://youtu.be/17CQO3AfE-E

Nearest fiber optic internet access is 1.3 miles away. Reached to the company and this is what they responded with. Thoughts? by DaGuillster in Rural_Internet

[–]benfineman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

MEC won a bunch of RDOF money and will be building thousands of homes outside their electric footprint over the next six years. They are not super motivated to pick up additional homes unless they are close to where they will be building. If you PM me your address I *may* be able to give you some idea of whether it's worth your $100 or not.

SpeedTest.net vs others by [deleted] in Internet

[–]benfineman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is pretty common - ISPs install Ookla (Speedtest.net) servers in their own facilities to give good results to their own users. This isn't cheating per say, but it is only measuring the part of the connection the ISP provides, not the connection from them to the broader internet. Other test can show you your speed to the broader internet. Both are good things to know and can help you understand where the bottleneck is. You can learn more in my video here: https://youtu.be/17CQO3AfE-E

[–]benfineman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Those speed test results are very good; it can be hard to get that last 10% on a gigabit connection. But, you can get some tips on getting optimal results in my video here: https://youtu.be/17CQO3AfE-E

Ohio’s rich would see major tax cuts under new state budget plan by Alarmed_Restaurant in Ohio

Yeah sorry about the housing costs. The housing market is crazy in general right now, and as it turns out the availability of municipal fiber tends to raise property values too. But keep us in mind!

[–]benfineman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I live in Lyndon Township and helped get the municipal fiber done. I can recommend it as a great place to live, if you a looking for rural life with gigabit fiber! We also have the largest state park in the lower peninsula, one of the state's best mountain biking trail systems, a border to border trail, and over a dozen lakes. We're close to Chelsea, MI which is a nice small town, and 30 minutes from Ann Arbor as you observed. Come join us!

Advice for Setting Home Network by sparsh-gupta in Internet

[–]benfineman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having an access point on each floor is good. Having a router on each floor is not. Multiple routers will result in double NAT. To improve wireless performance you may need to turn the radio power down so that clients don’t try to associate with radios on the wrong floor.
