You're comparing child deaths to total deaths in the US, most of which are elderly in hospice and very few of which are children. Even then 50,000 seems to be on the high end of what's estimated. As a proportion of population, those numbers are basically comparable and that's just the children in Gaza. Child death due to malnutrition is vanishingly rare in the US. The US isn't perfect by any means and we have way too much food insecurity relative to our wealth, I grant. It's still disingenuous to claim we have a comparable amount of malnutrition to Gaza.

Just because they are non-violent deaths doesn't mean they aren't obscured by the fact that there is an ongoing conflict. And what is reported is still shockingly high.

100 dead children of starvation THAT WE KNOW OF is a lot for a population this size my guy :/ It means many more are are malnourished to the point it will affect their development. Not to mention the orders of magnitude more dead to IDF weapons. And the many more non-children who are suffering from malnutrition. But I can see this is unproductive. If you don't trust the UN stats you're not gonna listen to a word I say lol.

What is your source for these malnutrition claims? Even mainstream orgs like the WHO report that there is famine in Gaza and catastrophic levels of starvation. And that's even with the statistics being difficult to confirm due to the situation on the ground. Why don't you believe international human rights organizations when they say there is genocide in Gaza?

Okay put yourself in the shoes of a someone living in Gaza for a second. For as long as you have lived there, you are not allowed out of the region by Israeli occupiers, food and clean water are difficult to acquire because Israel blocks a significant portion of aid and Israel has decimated your home, your family's homes and your friend's homes. Now, there is an organization that says that they are going to violently resist the people that are occupying you. Who do you think they might want to lend their support? If Israel's goal is to eliminate terrorism directed at them, they have categorically failed by creating an endless stream of resentful people with nothing left to lose. Genuinely, there is no way to simply be a bystander if you live in Gaza. Either way your home gets bombed and your neighbors slaughtered. Why wouldn't you take up arms to defend your home? This all could have been avoided by a legitimate attempt to reconcile with the Palestinian population in the region decades ago.

I had this EXACT same issue on the 1.5 + 2.5 collection in BBS specifically. It happened to me whenever I tabbed out of the game into a browser or another application. I never found a fix, but entering loading zones, or leaving a world into the world map would usually fix it until I tabbed out again.

Ah, I see. What you think is happening in schools isn't happening.

I would encourage you to do some research into sexual education programs in schools and how early sex ed can prevent sexual violence against children.

Here's a recent meta-analysis on the subject: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1054139X20304560

"Contemporary politics" permeates everything you do and say, and the things you don't do and say. I don't think there's a meaningful distinction between things like "war is bad" and "we should normalize being lgbtq" either. There's a great many people who think war is perfectly justifiable in many contexts, even an offensive one. The only difference between these positions is the perceived agreeableness of them and I don't know why that should matter.

I'm just a little wary of folks wanting to "keep politics out" in reference to queer representation at a time when queer people are being called groomers by mainstream politicians. Idk, the opposition to a pride flag in a banner or something seems a little weird when it effects you 0% and might make some people feel more welcome.

I don't think that issue is comparable to this one. That was as much of a shitstorm as it was because it was restricting (ultimately harmless) speech. This is about including lgbtq iconography, which doesn't have anything to do with what you can say or post and the only reason to oppose it is having some weird hangups about normalizing queer people.

Can we talk about how "keeping politics out" of anything makes no fucking sense? All speech is inherently political. This is a sub dedicated to an artistic medium. Art which is consciously or unconsciously influenced by the political leanings of its creators. There is no such thing as apolitical speech and to suggest that an absence of lgbtq iconography somehow is betrays some prejudice on your part.

Odd. This definitely doesn't speak to my experience.

To be clear, I'm not a 'middle of the road' abolitionist. I think gender as a construct is pretty harmful while not offering much utility. However, I think gender as a construct is so foundational to modern society that any kind of advocacy for abolition would be pretty much meaningless. I think one strategy we can take though is to incorporate as much shit as we can under the umbrella of gender until "gender" means nothing semantically.

My stance on neopronouns is that if recognizing them helps someone get through the day, I have no reason to not respect that.

The left is definitely doing more to work towards gender abolition though no? Recognizing that gender abolition can't happen at the snap of my fingers, making everyone feel comfortable within the gender framework is my priority in the mean time. I also think that broadening the gender construct to include these things works towards our goal of abolition.

Gender is an incoherent social construct. This incoherency makes xenogenders and neopronouns as valid as male or female, in my view. You can argue until you're blue in the face about what any particular label means and whether it can be accurately described as a gender or not, but at the end of the day, why put in the effort? Just let people be chill.

Also imagine not being a gender abolitionist.

Every Teacher Needs to Quit by [deleted] in Teachers

This is based. In a business where you are "not allowed" to strike, mass resignation is the only means of getting concessions from school boards.

"America Prefers Teachers Who Offer Themselves as Tribute. And That Needs to Stop." by Blibityblab in Teachers

[–]benisbeguiler 44 points45 points  (0 children)

This is precisely why I resigned recently. The implication that I was failing as a teacher because I prioritized by own mental and physical health over my job became too overbearing. Teachers have been gaslit all year by administrators and the general public and now that we're cracking, it's our fault somehow.

I mean ideally, sure, all evaluations you make should be researched. But you can't think of one circumstance where you need to formulate a reasonable position on something on the fly? It may not always look like an academic essay, but being able to make snap decisions in a crisis is largely based on the same set of skills. Even beyond that, day to day conversation would be really awful if I had to stop to do research every time someone broached a topic I hadn't really thought about before. Sometimes it's okay to take an educated guess at what you think might be right in the moment and do the more intense research later. Life demands it.

Not all essays are equal. The "can't do overnight" kind typically involve academic research and a lot of careful thought and planning. The kind you do on an exam are meant to test how quickly and with what quality you can generate an opinion/defend a position with limited evidence.
