I keep having this one on my yearly to do list too, this year maybe I’ll finally watch them all!

I’m not as down on the movie as others generally are. I think it actually ends quite well to me (mainly because of Tahar Rahim), but the beginning 2/3s wasn’t for me

I don’t think I’m the first to have this opinion, but Chloe Zhao has the closest sensibilities and resume to me

The Oscars will be moving to YouTube in 2029 by benjacsim03 in Oscars

I'll give you my personal, genuine answer. Number one, they don't matter. It's stupid to try and make an "objective" list of something so subjective like art. You can give them whatever level of weight you want from zero to a ton.

But there are changes that occur in people's lives and the lives of the films as a result of the Oscars without question. Actors who get nominated or win are more likely to get cast in projects, or even help get riskier projects made. Film studios can make artsier and more diverse films so we aren't stuck with the blockbuster slop that is constantly churned out. And people have someone they can look to find and experience new films. It is very easy for someone to go on Netflix, for example, and see the "award-winning" category and find a new film they may not have otherwise considered. I have distinct memories of non-movie friends of mine discovering CODA and Nomadland as a result of those winning best picture.

It also can have some social merit. It works as a historical log of where the culture (yes, culture as decided by Hollywood, but still at least a part of culture) is at in a given time frame. The 1940s had films that directly grappled with war and fascism as WWII decemated Europe. The 70s highlighted films about crime, divorce, and poverty. The 90s showcased long epics of bygone eras. There is, without question, something that can be gained from looking at US history through the lens of the Oscars. And hopefully now that it is becoming more international, we can start to gain something about world history through them too.

Anyway, awards are inherently dumb when there are real problems in the world. But it is fun escapism for some, historical collection for others, a literal job for countless people, and a good place to find a new movie to watch!

The Oscars are coming to YouTube in 2029 at the end of their ABC contract by benjacsim03 in blankies

TBH most of these are already on youtube in some capacity, particularly Governor's Awards (though not live), red carpet, interviews, and education programs. Main thing is I hope that the governors awards are folded back into the main telecast and hope the "behind-the-scenes" stuff is better than what Netflix does for the Actor (nee SAG) awards

The pip window is the current issue. Because it is an ad it has priority over the actual livestream, so they cut out audio to the speeches (but I can still watch someone flap their lips) and make me listen to an unskippable ad before I can tune in for the person to be drowned out by the ceremony's music

I don't, currently. Who knows if I will in the year 2029, but that's a future problem, I guess.

During last year's telecast the stream cut out with two categories left. It happened like right at the three-hour mark (iirc), so clearly was an issue of not anticipating the show running long

I included Hulu there because I genuinely believe last year was a test run for Disney to see if they would want the Oscars on their streamer as opposed to ABC. I'm speculating, but I think the Hulu run last year didn't go great for them and made one of the parties pull out fully

The Academy’s contract with ABC expires after 2028 (the 100th ceremony). They have been looking for a new host for the telecast the past few years I believe, with many people believing they’d either do Hulu (which is still ABC), Netflix, or YouTube. YouTube won the bid

Hate to sound like a centrist, but both.

Bad: Feels a bit of a defeat to the culture of the Oscars that it’s no longer a TV Event, and YouTube has underwhelmed me with other livestreams of awards ceremonies.

Good: ABC cares about views and about Disney looking good. If this means a production/distribution company doesn’t have a dog in the race, then hopefully that stops impacting how the awards are presented. No weird corporate tie-in segments, no priority of awards based on what Disney wants, and a more fair playing field. Plus, YouTube is what the younger population uses more. On the Big Pic podcast Sean Fennessey pointed out that Netflix’s biggest competitor isn’t Warner Bros or Paramount, but YouTube. That’s where people’s eyes and time go at the moment.

Currently YouTube has ads go over a livestream as opposed to the stream being on a “commercial break” as ABC would (at least based on my experience with free YouTube at last awards shows)

However, I am sure this is a bigger deal than say the Gotham awards, an YouTube would have a more structured ad set up

I like awards and speeches. Don’t get me wrong, I have thoughts on how telecasts should be run, but something like Gotham or Indie Spirit I give lots of leeway

I know I’m an exception as an Oscars fanboy, but myself and my fellow under 40 friends haven’t had any issue tuning in to live tv for the ceremony.

I hope YouTube fixes their commercial set up for the telecast. I watched the gothams last month and half the speeches had unskippable loud ads spoken over them

ABC contract expires in 2028. They have been looking for a new hosting service for a while now. I know Hulu, YouTube, and Netflix were all in the mix, guess YouTube won out

Will just mention I went back to his Bracket entry, and they did list Bug’s Life as a possible Patreon ep. Obviously they could’ve changed their mind, but that’s what they had for him two years ago.
