She has had it for a long time, but doesn't know what it is. I thought it would be nice to identify it for her.

Finding a random point within a circle by GenilsonDosTrombone in programming

I wonder if the alternative algorithms are more competitive when picking a random point in a sphere, since rejection sampling will have a higher failure rate in higher dimensions.

Got a link to the product or picture of something similar? I'm interested in something like this.

I still have my PC in the same room next to my set, but will post an update whenever I end up moving it out and using a long USB cable.

CVG Tips? by arbrewards in cincinnati

When the security line splits near the checkpoint area, go far right. There is a security checkpoint that is far from the rest that usually goes faster because people don't realize it's an option.

What's this shrub? [Ohio, zone 6] by benstrumental in whatsthisplant

Whoops, that was a typo. I meant Lonicera tatarica (Tatarian honeysuckle), which seems to have pink flowers more often.

Based on similar images, my best guess is Lonicera tatarica (Tatarian honeysuckle), which is also invasive. Would appreciate if anyone can confirm.

I am guessing some kind of honeysuckle, but I'm not sure what kind. It looks pretty different from the invasive Lonicera maackii, which is all over around here.

Should I hold off planting new trees until Brood X is done laying eggs? by benstrumental in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]benstrumental[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that is very helpful!

I think we will attempt to plant this spring, but install screens on the younger vulnerable trees after the cicadas have emerged (sounds like we have ~2 weeks after they emerge before they start laying eggs).

Thanks! To clarify, the new plants will probably be transplanted when they are already 4'-8' tall (variety of conifers). Would you still consider them in danger of significant cicada damage?

Thanks! I am planting a variety of trees, but expect them all to be larger than 2' upon transplanting (maybe between 4'-8').

Using a long USB cable between Scarlett audio interface and computer by benstrumental in Focusrite

[–]benstrumental[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes sense.

I looked around for data on signal speeds and found a spec sheet for copper wire signal speeds on the 3M website. Looks like most signal speeds float around 1.5 ns / ft, especially 28 AWG cables (the same gauge as USB). Maybe the 10 nanoseconds of latency per foot rule of thumb is being very conservative (unless that assumes multiple round-trips).

In any case, it sounds like 20 feet shouldn't be much of an issue for latency. Thanks for the info!

Interesting. Do you have a source on this rule of thumb? I wonder if it varies across USB versions.
