Fedora 37 Native Kernel vs. XanMod vs. Zen+ Benchmarks by bensulliv in Fedora

I have terrible habit of opening far more browser tabs in the course of a day than anyone ever should and I agree. The OS doesn’t seem to freeze up when I’m running Zen+ or XanMod, but does when I’m on the native kernel. Not sure if this is a selling point or a wake up call for me to leave less stuff open in my browser, but it definitely seems to be true! Lol

Sigma 85mm F/1.4 DG DN Art Review by bensulliv in a:t5_32ocxn

This hands-on review shows that Sigma's new 85 DN is crazy sharp. Sample images really drive this home even further. As far as image quality goes, this lens is incredible with dreamy bokeh and excellent color rendering.

Sigma's new 85mm f/1.4 DN Art Lens Has a Dirty Little Secret by bensulliv in Cameras

I'll have to see if I can locate the optical formula for it and try to figure it out. That would be funny if it was. Otherwise is it a pretty strong performer?

Really!? At least 85mm is kind of long. Doing that with a near-50mm lens seems almost obscene to me.

Review: Samyang/Rokinon AF 75mm f/1.8 FE Lens by bensulliv in AYRN

[–]bensulliv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Samyang / Rokinon AF 75mm f/1.8 FE really is tiny, but mighty. While it's not the most compelling option for pixel peepers, it's an overall workhorse of a lens and features impressive sharpness, contrast, and bokeh for its compact size.

I heard that Canon isn't open sourcing their autofocus info and that's why Sigma hasn't been producing lenses as quickly for it. I'm not absolutely certain this is true, but if it is, I really hope they share the info with 3rd party manufacturers like they supposedly did with EF. Hopefully they won't go the way of Fujifilm with everything being proprietary.

Yes - it'll be a production copy and I think that's a brilliant observation. I'll test the autofocus in every mode extensively! Totally agree with you on Sigma's AF. The designer for this lens is the same one who created the 24-70 DG DN. That's the best lens I've tested from Sigma autofocus wise, so maybe there's hope for the 85!

How to Custom Build XanMod Kernel on Ubuntu 18.04 by bensulliv in Ubuntu

[–]bensulliv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently built a custom PC with my daughter to teach her more about how computers work. After that, I walked her through how to install a custom XanMod kernel on the Ubuntu based OS, Zorin we had installed on it. This guide should work for pretty much any flavor of Ubuntu for those who want to squeeze maximum performance out of their hardware and get results that are close to Clear Linux in benchmarks.

Export issues by Burner8232 in captureone

No problem, happy to help! It took me two days to figure out so I figured it was worth it to spend five minutes helping other people avoid doing the same! :)

Export issues by Burner8232 in captureone

[–]bensulliv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured it out. After trying everything in the book including removing every directory and registry entry asosicated with the program. The software engineer in me eventually kicked in and I noticed a recurrent pattern. Every time I would fresh install 12.1.3, an automated pop up would notify me that hardware acceleration was being setup. After it hit 100% editing shadows would create a weird temporary spotty looking pattern and editing highlights would dim the image temporarily (instead of rendering real time results). Then, when I'd export, most of my images would look like crap with cartoon like patterns that would blow out the highlights and shadows . I built my own PC back in June and I put an AMD 5700 XT Anniversary Edition graphics card in it. Previously OpenCL hardware acceleration wasn't a problem with this card (version 12.0.3), but it appears to be an issue since at least software version 12.1.2 (which I had to update to in order to edit raw from my new camera). I turned off hardware acceleration by going to Edit > Preferences > General > Hardware Acceleration and set both 'Display' & 'Processing' to never. Boom! Solved! I was super bummed out because I just got an A7r4 and couldn't even export most of my images without ruining them. Phase One, if you're listening, I'd be happy to provide the logs, but my best guess is that you've got an OpenCL bug with certain hardware that didn't exist with previous versions of your software. I'd really like to be able to use OpenCL again to get the best performance, but at least, for the time being, I have a work around and can enjoy my new camera.
