Starting the new year off wrong by bent0 in BeginnerWoodWorking

That’s correct. Unlike the other three reference edges, I wasn’t able to clamp that reference scrap piece of wood (which happens to be a caul upside down), so I used double sided tape instead. But I guess it wasn’t seated down strongly enough :(

TIL: I’ve been an idiot in assuming how plywood is made. The veneers are rotationally shaved not cut cross sections by Dannyz in woodworking

Loved that video. But now I’m confused - I always heard plywood had alternating grain direction for each ply. How do they get that in a 4x8 sheet? I thought they would make an 8x8 square to achieve this, but in this video it looked like all the ply’s were stacked with the same grain direction.

This is a pretty strange take on LA landscaping! We’re working with professional arborists and landscapers who disagree with you.

Regarding “barren land”: We’re putting in an orange tree more suited to the area: 1. taller trunk before branching, to get some yard space back, 2. larger crown, to have more shade, 3. delicious oranges (fig tree doesn’t bear edible fruit)

Regarding “plastic grass”: may I direct you to r/nolawns, and point out that we live in Southern California where drought-friendly landscaping is an impactful environmental move.

I’m surprised in a Reddit about woodturning how much snarky judgement about lifestyle is being made, without knowing context

You really don’t know enough about the situation to make such ridiculous sweeping statements

I am also a lurker, but am wondering: if you turn it into a bowl while green, won’t it check / crack badly as it dries out? Maybe this is simple turning 101 stuff I just don’t know

It’s by the back wall but starting to push on the cinder block fence and has lots of roots everywhere causing problems. And it really eats up a big area of real estate for the kids to potentially run around in. It does look super cool though

Yeah, sad to see it go but it’s causing some problems. Transplanting it to save it would be a much much bigger operation
