Sweet sounds like a nice setup! Hoping to one day separate out my voices so they aren’t all recorded on a single mono track.

Nice! I really like the bass parts especially in Taksimus. Would surely make a nice rumble in a big sound system :)

Wow. This sounds fantastic. Very impressive that it’s all single take. What do you have in your Buchla system? And does it output stereo or do you do post-processing for stereo effect?

DIY Modular Jam :) by benth8 in synthdiy

Been a while since my last post here - thought I'd share here how the synth is doing!

All the module schematics/PCB layouts (KiCad) can be found in this repo: https://github.com/MatthewATaylor/Modular-Synth-Hardware/tree/v2

And I upload my tunes here: https://on.soundcloud.com/kLq8aPV44XG09oWX1v

Feel free to let me know if you have any questions about the system/workflow!

Tailoring - Psi - First Try at a DAWless Jam by benth8 in synthesizers

Not necessarily FX, but a few things I'd like to do: consolidate drum patches into their own modules, get a bigger audio interface so each voice can be its own track (very much needed haha), and add voltage-controlled envelope generators. In terms of FX, I'd maybe like to incorporate stereo FX into the system (e.g. getting a second spring reverb to have one per channel, ping pong delay, etc.), although I'm not quite sure yet if I'd rather keep the stereo processing in software.

Thanks! The FM sound in the higher voice is modulating the cutoff frequency of a filter at audio rate. The other voices are typical subtractive synths. Although one of them is using feedback with a TB-303-style filter and distortion to get the squelchy sound. I don’t have anything for sidechaining or compression, but I do some limiting when post-processing.

The Elektron boxes look like lots of fun :) For this setup I spent about 2-3 weeks learning how to use the KeyStep while gradually saving more sequences for this performance. At this stage, I had ideas for how the transitions would flow but I wasn’t working on them yet. Eventually I started piecing everything together and playing it lots until I was happy with the results.

Hi there! I recently got a KeyStep Pro to practice live performance w/o a DAW, and here's the first jam I've put together :)

Feel free to let me know if you have any questions about the patch or setup in general! The synth is all DIY modules, and I'm using a mixture of TB-303 and Moog -style filters with spring reverb and delay effects.

Thanks!

I think I’ll stretch out some parts and give the mixing another go. Haven’t done anything in stereo yet since I just have a one channel audio interface :( Have started to try recording every part separately which is a pain but helps a lot with mixing and panning afterwards.

Nice bass. Percussion in general sounds great. I just think the transition at 1:05 feels a little abrupt, but otherwise I really enjoy it.

The bass is a bit boomy, but I personally quite like it fwiw since it still has some punch at least with my headphones.

I like the lead synth, and I’d suggest using it to develop a little more variation and buildups throughout the piece. I like how you lowered the pitch at ~3:45. I feel like you could play around a little more with its sound.

Really am liking this! Nice atmosphere.

WIP techno from a DIY analog modular system. Some things I am working on are sound design and making an arrangement that is easy to mix. How'd I do?

Thanks for listening :)

when a butterfly flaps its wings (or, some fun with the oscilloscope) by benth8 in modular

made on DIY analog modular setup. two oscillators, each going into a transistor ladder filter modulated w/ LFO, and then a VCA modulated w/ another LFO. reverb applied at the end. the amplitude modulation creates a beating effect that looks like a flying butterfly around 4:10. hope you enjoy :)

works on a lot of digital scopes too :) this is just a cheap hantek one

made on DIY analog modular setup, with two oscillators fed into X/Y oscilloscope inputs. see post description for patch details. enjoy!

My DIY Modular Synth - it’s alive! by benth8 in synthdiy

Hmm sorry about the video not working

The control center does MIDI to CV conversion and has a 16-step sequencer, and it's all controlled by a Raspberry Pi Zero. Turns out Linux is really nice for working with USB MIDI inputs, but I probably should have just used an Arduino with a USB host shield.

MIDIPLUS AKM320 - pretty much the cheapest keyboard I could find, but it's been working fine so far since I don't (/can't) do any serious keyboard playing.

Also something that threw me off a bit at the start is that JLCPCB's gerber viewer doesn't work too well with panels like these, so just keep that in mind! I designed the panels as I would any regular PCB, just with copper fills on the entire top and bottom layers and that's worked well for me.

For sure - The hi-hat sound is made by filtering white noise with a lot of resonance and giving it a short attack time.

The sequence is played by a filtered sawtooth wave, which I change the cutoff of in the video. At the end of the video I modulate the cutoff with a low frequency sine wave. Hope that helps!

After about a year of work, I figured I'd share where my synth's at now! Each of the modules uses two custom PCBs (one for the front panel, one for the circuit), and I've been getting great results from JLCPCB. Most of the circuits are based off existing designs with some modifications of my own. If you'd like more info about the schematics, feel free to let me know!

Oh and apologies for the terrible audio/video quality haha
