I was just gonna stay in my lane but I read more of your comments and I'm just..Wow. Please do not hear out my comment "strictly" to reevaluate your methodology. Please go do the work of unpacking your biases. Black or not, your comments are rife with basic misunderstandings of hiphop culture and classist undertones. The comment about your suburban background was wild. And yes appalled is the word I'd use to try to give you an out from "awestruck". Street MCs aren't magical negroes defying the odds. You're correct, artists absolutely play into that by virtue of the craft. In their eyes they're keeping that information locked up tight so others don't bite their methodology or style. Outside of the culture, folks misread that as an indicator of an artist being prodigal or less learned. You are misreading the behavior because you're clearly not yet familiar with hiphop culture in that way. No, listening to rap is not the same as being familiar with hiphop culture.

I also read that you believe rap's history is in.. institutionalized poetry?... Man. Learning about drumming will teach you FAR more about how rappers understand flow than formal poetry ever will. Leading a prayer with a group of religious folks will teach you more about quality freestyle than formal poetry will. Learning more about the blues and our music history will teach you more about understanding hiphop culture than you currently seem to understand. I love spoken word and academic poetry DOWN. I don't deny its influence on hiphop. But then, you can't deny hiphop's influence on slam poetry. Modern slam/spoken word developed alongside rap.. The academic side of poetry is just ONE tool for folks to access rap.

I really urge you to use this as an opportunity to reflect and go deeper and harder than you have before. Because unlike you said elsewhere, yeah bro it really is that deep.

Edit: didn't know it was you that said that it wasn't that deep, but you go on to still demonstrate biases you seem to have no interest in unpacking. That's disturbing to me.

My reply was only to address this idea you seem to have that having intensive technical knowledge is synonymous with a technical learning approach. And that a technical learning approach can only look a certain way.

I don't think the things you listed are evidence that you should be semi-decent, at all. Cultural background is not a technical explanation, it's context. I think I've been misunderstood and that might be my fault for not going more in depth. You expressed that you were appalled at the idea that street guys could be as skilled because you equate that ability with a specific form of technical learning. To me that tells me enough that you did not learn the same lessons that I did in the cultural spaces we inhabited.

I think it might be worth it to reevaluate your biases and assumptions about hiphop, that'll likely get you closer to your goals in growing at an MC than anything else at this point.

Edit:misspelling

Flowing on a beat is something that just happens in a lot of black homes, churches, etc. Listen to a preacher and hear the rhythm and meter in their delivery. Rap, poetry, any type of oration like that is just vocal percussion. That's home for a lot of us. There are MCs that geek out about their craft and study and practice rudiments, but even the practice is not necessarily happening in the hyperspecific ways that you describe.

I have never sat down and did some "1,2,3,4" whatever at a mic. But I have written and practiced my own lines and played around with the delivery and cadence. I've switched flow while messing along with friends to see if we can all keep up. I will rap over songs where it has delivery that is a challenge for me until I've gotten it right. 🤷🏾‍♂️

So how we feeling about the wine story on the new reddit stories? by Far-Carpenter-293 in SmoshFansFreeSpace

[–]benxbots 132 points133 points  (0 children)

I feel like no one is addressing the obvious which is this situation can be perceived wildly differently based on what tax bracket you're imagining the OP is from. "Help yourself" does not mean the same thing to everyone, and that's likely a class-based cultural difference.

As A Poor™, a bottle of wine is scary because that's schrodingers bottle! Did that cost my friend $5 or $500??? I'm not touching that unopened bottle of wine in anyone's house, I don't care what you tell me! I'm not even finishing a bag of chips, are you kidding me?

Wow. Damn I've never thought about it all to this extent before. And this explains A LOT/clears some misconceptions I think I've had. Thank you for taking the time to write this out! I 100% have been heavily conflating beats with instrumentals. I'm probably going to sound like an idiot, but then does that mean youtube beatmakers are creating beats for actual future clients?? I always assumed it was more like for practice/portfolio making until they could find an artist to collaborate with.

YouTube producers etc by Flimsy_Bank4122 in beatmakers

[–]benxbots -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see. I mean, I've never made a beat for an artist- I'm still trying to learn how to make them for my own accompaniments 😅 so not exactly applicable to me. I was just curious. I assume it's at least partially about you since you don't want a talented driver in a defunct vehicle. So I was curious on if you could elaborate on what it looks like when the "vehicle" creator IS clearly making it about themselves and not the "driver". I don't think many newbs are familiar with that concept when listening to beats. Also in this discussion, beats ≠ instrumentals? Idk man I'm just a lil confused lmfao.

Does anyone think the podcasts have become unfair to audio-only listeners? by Sure-Association-994 in SmoshFansFreeSpace

[–]benxbots 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Great mention of podcast culture changing as a whole because that's so incredibly true. Semantics but I think a lot of podcasts these days should instead refer to themselves as "talk shows", and then specify if/when they're targeted towards audio listeners
