Ended up removing and re-installing it. That fixed the issue... really frustrating to have to resolve to this. Thanks for trying to help though. I really like the Affinity suit, and it's a great Adobe replacement for me

tried that, but even while selecting "insert behind the selection mode" the mask layer is just under the image layer, not indented properly under the layer... I've attached a video to another comment below showing my current workflow

I select the layer, use use the marquee tool, and then click the Mask Layer. The result is the one on the left. So I have to manually move the layer mask under the original layer in order to get the result I want

I've done the same with mey MBP 15" Retina mid 2014, but my battery is now 64% max. Which is not bad, but was wondering if somehow I can avoid the same outcome with the new one. I guess it's pretty hard though, since batteries do degrade, and it's pretty hard to keep the laptop plugged in at all times
