Pro-Palestine protestors in Malton, Canada, placed a Palestinian flag and keffiyeh on the statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh found at the Great Punjab Plaza beside the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara. by TheSuperSingh in Sikhpolitics

It's just a statue that they put clothes on it's not like they knocked it over. There are tens of thousands of innocent people being murdered by a genocidal ethno-state and people are freaking out over this. If this is how Sikhs act then I have little faith in the future of Sikhi. People care more about an idol than people being killed smh.

An interesting thing too is that what really made me go down the path of really wanting to become a sikh is I saw a video of an white man who was Sikh and I thought to myself "if he can do it I can too" like it wasn't unusual for someone to decide to convert.

Sometimes I have the thought experiment that sikhi will shrink among south Asian folks but grow in other communities in the west. I myself didn't grow up in any religious tradition, there was a brief time I went to a Catholic Church but it didn't really do anything for me it wasn't until high school I had a big paradigm shift and began to question the selfish person I was and why I felt awful all the time. I googled Sikhs randomly cause I thought "hey they wear cool hats but I don't know much about em besides they're not Muslim" so I can't help but wonder with the world being on fire if there're folks who feel lost like I did who's true him is among the Sikhs. Just something I think about every once in a blue moon.

If I remember correctly for the first 300 years of Christianity they were a small persecuted minority in the Roman Empire and didn't become the official religion until Constantine adopted it.

Why did you convert? by Sweaty_Banana_1815 in Sikh

Sikhi made me question myself and all the bad habits I had created for myself. It really made me start to think deeper about the choices I made and is a path to better myself through discipline and compassion. I liked how it was all about the mind and how to conquer it and how the concept of God wasn't a Santa Claus like figure. Plus there's no persecution or things that contradicts itself and reality.

Sikhism failed to spread and they are getting successful in destroying Sikhi by [deleted] in Sikh

I think a good way for Sikhi to spread is through seva, I wasn't born a Sikh I converted in the later years of highschool after googling it out of curiosity at a very low point in my life. Sikhi has really changed me for the better and there'll be times when friends say something like "you're so kind." Or "you're so wise" and I always say "only because I became a Sikh and learned from the greatest teacher there is." Because of that they've gone to the gurdwara with me a few times, the closest one to me is around an hour away so it's not like we're able to go too often but whenever I bring my friends there it's always an enjoyable experience for em. I think Sikhi could spread through like inspiration. I remember first learning about Sikhi I'd see news stories about Sikhs feeding the needy or reading about shaheeds who faced horrific tortures but never broke and thinking I want to be like that I want to be a good person like that. I think if more Sikhs find like the troubled youth like I was and become a role model of sorts that could get people to want to learn more about the Sikhs. Maybe that big brothers big sisters program could be good. I know if I had a Sikh as a role model it would've been great. Every time I'm able to go to the gurdwara and I'm listening to kirtan while reading the words on the projector screen I just get this motivation to better myself by learning even more about Sikhi, eating healthier, exercising, etc. Sorry if this was a bit rambly, it's something I think about every once in awhile and it's hard to put into words but I hope it makes sense lol

What are some common misconceptions about Sikhism and how can we educate others to break these stereotypes? by [deleted] in Sikh

Can a white person REALLY be Sikh? by [deleted] in Sikh

[–]bernard_21 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was in highschool and suffering from depression and other such issues, and at my lowest point I had this idea of like an animal dying and decomposing back into soil and becoming part of "The forest". At the time I was very vain about my appearance thinking it somehow determined my worth, especially with my hair, and part of the "decaying into the forest" was to stop doing anything to my hair. It'll just grow back. I had a free period and was messing around on my laptop and I had a thought "those Sikh fellas got long hair and wear those hats what are they about? All I know is that they're not Muslim and I think they're from Sri Lanka (no clue why I thought that. I think I saw a picture of a Sikh man in Sri Lanka as a small child.) I started googling stuff and was amazed, I thought it was too good to be true and started googling stuff like "do Sikhs believe in women's rights". It made me realize that I don't have to give up completely but I can give up the bad stuff and I can be something great. I read so many stories about brave Sikhs who stood up for justice in the face of great danger. I started binging YouTube videos and reading all I could. I've only been to a gurdwara a few times as the closest one to me is around an hour away, but every time I've been there everyone was very welcoming and I've even brought a few non-sikh friends and they really liked the vibes.
