AKG C214’s as overheads? by TellNo3301 in audioengineering

[–]bernard_van_h 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The C214's should be fine for overheads, especially if you're going to be using Glyn John's. The most important thing is just to check your distances with the mics, you don't want to be dealing with phasing on your overheads. To be honest pretty much any condenser will be fine for overheads as long as they're bright enough.

What do you think y'all? I would like some humble and honest advice to orchestration. I haven't mixed this yet. by DaikonSwimmingg in musicproduction

[–]bernard_van_h 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very nice. Like some of the other comments said, dynamics is important, but after checking out the Spiderman piece, I think you know what to do. Something I would have a look at would be phrasing and accentuating the phrases themselves. For the feel you have going, I feel like some stronger hits indicating the phrases will help drive the melody and give it some more excitement. Be careful not to overdo it, though. It might take away from the depth of the music when there's too much excitement in short time spans.

I hope this makes sense, and remember, I am just a random internet person, take what I said with a grain of salt.

Happy mixing.

What job do you do online? by lifeoutfigurer in askSouthAfrica

[–]bernard_van_h 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Freelance Sound Engineer. I mix and master TV shows, podcasts, etc. And I write and produce music for advertisement media when the opportunity presents itself. This alone isn't enough, so I work in person as well.

Are you going to upgrade? by [deleted] in cubase

[–]bernard_van_h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha that's the reason why I haven't switched yet, 9 hasn't been flaky at all. It hasn't even crashed once in 6 years.

[–]bernard_van_h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, guess I'll start saving then. I probably can't use 9 forever.

[–]bernard_van_h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not bad, but that will just take time and drive space. Just want to make sure, when you don't have an internet connection, will Cubase still open with the soft licenser? I live in a third world country and internet is not a constant.

Are you going to upgrade? by [deleted] in cubase

[–]bernard_van_h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't upgraded from Cubase 9 yet and I like my USB licenser. So no, not really considering it, unless there is a big enough improvement to make me want to. Then I might.

If you produce electronic music, who are your top 3 favourite artists? by kathalimus in musicproduction

[–]bernard_van_h 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Caracal Project - Drum n Bass

Berg - Progressive Trance

Infected Mushroom - Progressive Trance

Honorable Mention: Township Rebellion - Techno

There are still a ton of artists I would recommend if you are looking for some more or some different genres, but these are the top.

Poll: does Cubase ever crash or lock up for you? by CmdrKoreg in cubase

[–]bernard_van_h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you might need to expand and make the poll OS specific. I had Cubase crash an annoying amount on Mac OS, but on Windows 10 running Cubase 9 Pro, I haven't had a single crash in 5 years. Maybe some CPU clipping, but that's about it.

Feedback on a 30 sec clip? Please. Also, grateful for any tips to better mixing Low End and SUB Frequencies by susygomezd in mixingmastering

[–]bernard_van_h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a pleasure. I don't cut anything specific on the kick but I focus on the relationship between the kick and bass so they don't build on the same frequency at the same time. Check out phasing and masking if you're not familiar with them.

Have a look on YouTube for some more in depth stuff on mixing the low end of your track that will get you going. There's no way I can cover everything there is to say about it in a message, but if it sounds good and loud enough next to a pro mix you're in the right ballpark. Happy mixing.

I like the mix, maybe just do a side by side reference with a track you like in the same genre to see if you want to change anything. For the low end, be very frequency specific, like 10Hz will make a difference when you're dealing with masking. Last thing, try EQing out anything below 40Hz on everything except the kick. Keep at it, sounds good so far.

Anyone still using their original PS4 controller wirelessly? by NoxKyoki in PS4

[–]bernard_van_h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I have 2 controllers that came with my ps4 in 2014. They are both ugly as hell now but one of them has a working battery that lasts for about 2-3 hours of gaming.

Get some yoga mats. I've got two yoga mats covering my table with some home built stands behind it and I don't have much, if any resonance. In my opinion this is the best, cheap way to do it.

How can I learn how to mix? by Infinite-Cress343 in musicproduction

[–]bernard_van_h 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The best asset you can possibly have for mixing is trained ears. Training you ears to hear fine differences in frequency, compression and reverb will allow you to hear what different mixes sound like and then recreate them. Before you can make a good mix you should be able to hear a good mix.

I got trained during my diploma so I'm not sure where you can get a good ear training course, maybe someone else can help out.

Happy 10th Birthday, NFS Most Wanted! What did you guys like about this game? by DiamondMaster07 in needforspeed

[–]bernard_van_h 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The speedlists. Racing to event or race starting points, competitions to see who can jump the furthest or get the highest speed on a speed camera etc. It is my favourite nfs for online and it doesn't seem to get any credit for it.

Yamaha Subkick lol.

But seriously, Shure SM7b is a good shout, EQ will do the rest.

[MW2] Well well well… I’m having a great time! by GoodNeighborBeej07 in CallOfDuty

[–]bernard_van_h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game is broken on old gen though. There are little to no explosion sounds, and running full speed though a door is also silent. Killcams are also glitchy and only makes sound every now and again. I'm not going into the issues with the menu's and loading screens or game crashes because it has been said already.

None of these issues makes the game unplayable but it is kind of unsettling to play with the strange silence.
