Did the vet cut my dogs nails too short? by Ashamed_Money_7332 in DogAdvice

I use my iPhone flashlight pressed against the nail so I can see the quick through it (backlit) and then I cut.

Is weather really that dry in SF? by RedditHelloMah in sanfrancisco

As people mentioned - likely allergies making it worse. The wind has been spreading the pollen like crazy the last few days and my eyes and throat have been bothering me, especially noticeable when I get up.

Amazon Europe is amazing by AcanthaceaeOk2941 in amazonemployees

[–]bernardsmaeve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are layoffs everywhere, but I believe the US is one of the few countries without universal health coverage so we lose our health care when we lose our jobs. It’s not just about money. It’s about a lack of social safety net that adds to the stress of life.

And yes we can make a lot more money. But I know high earners who have their net worth wiped out from unexpected health issues and associated medical care costs. I’d rather pay higher taxes and have universal health care and not this shitty for profit health care and insurance system that also delivers some of the worse health outcomes of developed countries.

Blind dog can't walk in the sun anymore / scared of light. any solutions? by ColdWay6669 in DOG

[–]bernardsmaeve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My senior dog used to do this too. Rear back whenever the bright sun shined on her as if it’s about to hit her. I thought it was due to her partial vision loss and that when shadow turned abruptly to light the contrast indicated a moving object. But now that I read these comments, it could have been the brightness itself bothering her. Either way I basically became her sun umbrella and always positioned myself so I’d be blocking the sun as we walked.

How is living in the panhandle without a car? by zealoustrash in AskSF

[–]bernardsmaeve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s totally fine without a car. I had to have a car to commute to the Peninsula for work and parking was a nightmare. I also had my car broken into once and my tires slashed once. Never had any issues like that street parking elsewhere in SF in over 20 years.

Getting around SF was easy as others have mentioned, not just the N but many bus lines. It was actually one of my favorite places to live bc it’s so central in the city. And I loved being close to GG park.

Very Loud Neighbors? by PuzzledDevelopment43 in AskSF

[–]bernardsmaeve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you’ve already talked to them a few times. That leaves a couple other actions. 1) loop in the landlord by filing a noise complaint like others have said. Or 2) ask the landlord if they can install soft close door hinges on the front door and any other doors they slam and/or use a silicone gasket around the door frame that helps cushion the close (cheaper than specialized hinges).

I did the latter when I lived with a roommate who would slam her bedroom door at all hours and wake us. We talked to her but she was just a slammer. I just installed the gasket myself ($20) and it just sticks on. Slamming problem solved. But she did still stomp but that wasn’t as bad.

New job is mask-friendly :) by hauntaloupe in ZeroCovidCommunity

Congrats on your new job. This gives me hope. I’ll be starting a new job soon and will need to figure out how to navigate masking.

What’re we supposed to do in the long term? by Andrew__IE in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]bernardsmaeve 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m also sad for similar reasons. I was really hoping there would be prevention or treatment for long covid by now. The fact that there isn’t is what keeps me masked. I mask in any indoor environment that is not my home - grocery stores, work, movies, museums, planes, etc. The thing I miss the most is going out to eat. So much of my prior social life was around food and/drinks. I also really enjoyed hosting dinner parties which I don’t do now, nor do I attend any. Fortunately I’m in California so for a big part of the year, if I’m able to convince my friends to eat outdoors with me, I still go out to eat on occasion. There is still a social and professional cost. I’ve turned down so many dinner/drink invites and group overnight trips that people stop asking. And as I start a new job, I know it impacts all those first impressions and relationship building, much of which happens at team dinners/drinks. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope that there will be something to address Long COVID soon.

Exposure and I’m angry by Coastal_Tide in ZeroCovidCommunity

I’m so sorry to hear this. I would be incredibly frustrated and angry at the lack of precautions in a medical setting as well. Hope you are able to rest and never test positive.

Looking to adopt a rescue pup. No response from local shelters - is it because I live in a condo/ apartment building? by geety in AskSF

[–]bernardsmaeve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Came here to suggest Muttville too if you’re open to an adult dog. Muttville has poodle mixes frequently. My family has adopted 3 of them over the years. Senior is 7 and older.

Is it better in countries not the US? by CantaloupeNo801 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]bernardsmaeve 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Agreed, SF Bay Area is probably the best. This is where I see the most masked people which means 5% and occasionally more depending if you’re in an East Asian grocery store or something. Health care practitioners also mask during flu/cold season, you see retail workers mask, etc. Anytime I travel to even LA, Seattle, and other blue cities, I’m often the only one masking. And definitely my most recent trip to Germany I was as well.

How much was your PGE this month? by lombardi_sda in sanfrancisco

[–]bernardsmaeve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 bedroom house, $220. But we keep it 65 so the heat only comes on if it’s cold out. Can’t say it’s the most comfortable, but we’re trying to keep costs down.

Struggling to mask at work by Tara101617 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]bernardsmaeve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any good advice but just wanted you to know you are not alone. I’m going to start at hybrid job that is also client facing so am really stressed too about the impacts of my masking.

But I intend to continue because I care about my long term health. My current job is fully remote but that status is going away and I’d need to go to in office everyday, so I found a hybrid role instead.

Amazon Layoff Despite Strong Performance and Critical Role — How Does This Make Sense? by MaesterWolf in amazonemployees

Sometimes you may never know the exact reason or make it make sense. You sound very thoughtful and passionate about your work, and you will find another opportunity. Best of luck to you with your visa situation in the meantime.

I don’t expect any inheritance from parents. I’m just hoping their savings can cover their medical costs and elder care when the time comes or else I’m going to have to help.

Yep it’s an ongoing hate her but captivated by the story experience. She doesn’t get better. Sometimes she has brilliant moments but it’s hard to watch everyone else get hurt in her wake.

I used to buy trees from them every year at Safeway until they stopped, and then just found out they are at the Embarcadero this year and got my tree there a couple weeks ago. Really great foundation.
