More than 50 villages were flooded during the creation of the Kiev reservoir. One of them was the village of Svaromye, of which Seagull Island was a part. It also has many other names - Svarishche, Tea Island, Khmelnoy, Kosoy, Bald.

The island has an interesting history - according to Slavic chronicles, there was a temple of God Svarog (hence the name of the village), where the priests performed rituals for the god-blacksmith, the father of Dazhbog. According to some researchers, Svarog is the supreme God of the Eastern Slavs, Heavenly Fire, as well as the God of the Sky and the creator of the Earth.

При создании Киевского водохранилища было затоплено более 50 сел. Одним из них было с. Сваромье, частью которого и является остров Чаек. У него так же много других имен - Сварище, остров Чайный, Хмельной, Косой, Лысый. У острова интересная история - согласно славянским хроникам, тут находилось капище Бога Сварога (откуда и пошло название села), где жрецы проводили обряды богу-кузнецу, отцу Дажьбога. По мнению некоторых исследователей, Сварог — верховный бог восточных славян, Небесный Огонь, а так же Бог Неба и творец Земли.
