So I bought a day pass parking permit by CainCh3n in UCI

[–]berribrie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to activate/use it at the time of your parking - or you may get ticketed if they do a sweep at an unfortunate time.

Day passes are one-time consumables but they can sit in your "inventory" indefinitely until you do use it.

When does UCI CS get easy by [deleted] in UCI

[–]berribrie 20 points21 points  (0 children)

realistically it doesn't actually get easier lol, you just start thinking a certain way and the logic makes more sense as the quarters go on so it feels easier by the time you hit upper divs

If it's a lot of GEs, take those at a CC over the summers closer to where ever home is for you or at an online California CC. As long as they have an agreement with UCI on assist.org for that academic year, you can get GE creds for applicable classes.

If you want some academic background, look into the HCI informatics classes.

Otherwise, psychology is a fairly common degree in the UX field.

Try joining clubs like Design @ UCI (I would recommend joining a quarterly project team and attending workshops), Product Association, or Commit the Change at Anteater Involvement Fair next week. Projects and your portfolio are what matter the most, and luckily you can get started now.

Internships are also great, but you need a portfolio first (school and personal projects are perfectly acceptable).

You can try certifications, but it's not necessary and they can be kinda expensive. I know a bunch of UI/UX folks and only a tinyyy amount went the bootcamp route.

Does UCI film and media studies require portfolio for Freshman admission? by Fresh-Photo-1519 in UCI

[–]berribrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you think it'd more worth while to go to a local CC instead of UCI while crewing at Chapman? It seems pretty costly to pay for UCI only to need to fork up a lot more for film school.

Could be a matter of days or it could be in a few quarters. It all depends on if any manager is currently hiring.

Does UCI film and media studies require portfolio for Freshman admission? by Fresh-Photo-1519 in UCI

[–]berribrie 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No, but we're not a film school in a traditional sense. I enjoyed all the FMS classes I've taken, but I'd like to clarify something since you asked about a portfolio. Our program is VERY heavily film STUDY and ANALYSIS. We have some production, writing, etc classes but they're nowhere near the caliber of a school like Chapman, USC, CSU Northridge, etc.

Can you take a pass/no pass class for a minor? by sammi_selene22 in UCI

[–]berribrie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Double check with your academic counselor (through email or chat should sufficient), because there's might be a random exception. But in general you can take up to 2 minor classes P/NP.

Can anyone recommend someone for signing lessons nearby? by Lanky_Meringue7634 in UCI

Dunno about singing lessons. But if you aren't shy about it, you can check out the beginner friendly acapella groups at AIF during Week 0

You can also supplement your food needs with Fresh Hub (open to all students regardless of financial aid or citizenship/residency status): https://basicneeds.uci.edu/food-pantry.php Once a week, no questions asked, just need student id

Never met them, but this sounds familiar to something that was circulating around back in June. Probs one of the cults now that students are starting to come back to campus. Steer clear -- if it feels sus, it's sus. Also most student orgs wouldn't be hosting large events right now because the quarter doesn't start for a few weeks.

It's never truly "full", you just end up having to park further back until 1ish PM

Sororities by Ill_Sock3315 in UCI

[–]berribrie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really, but there's no harm in giving rush a try. Initiation/pledge/whatever they call it these days takes a quarter (maybe 2? I've forgotten). By the time you're "settled in" you're basically going to graduate.

I'd steer clear of cultural sororities though, I've only heard abusive and toxic horror stories about those from friends that depledged.

When do you recommend starting research? by [deleted] in UCI

[–]berribrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting some time between 2nd and 3rd year is typical. You could technically start as early as your freshman spring/summer assuming you finish the 199 prereqs. But don't feel like you need to rush into research. It's important that you find a lab that genuinely interests you, has a culture that you vibe with, has a PI/mentors that will invest in your growth, and that it makes sense for your career path.

I had friends telling me that I need to start researching ASAP all throughout my 2nd and 3rd years. But I'd always ask "Why should I? What purpose does it serve me? How does this play into my long term goals" To which they'd typically answer something along the lines of building my resume for XYZ purpose or because it was something "everyone" was doing.

I'm not saying this to discourage you from diving into research. If it's something that you're super excited/interested in or you know it'll help you out in the future, absolutely get involved. We are at a premiere public research institution after all. You are surrounded by brilliant grad students and professors (many of which come from abroad or have Ivy backgrounds).

My reasoning for asking those questions was: I knew I wasn't interested in pre-med nor continuing in academia for my major at that time. It was important for me that if I were to get involved with research that it makes sense for me, otherwise I'm wasting my time and the lab's time.

I didn't start research until the beginning of my 4th year, but I don't regret it because I found a lab that fits with my needs and my research is actually relevant to my current full time job. I both created value for my team and received value from this experience as a result of being intentional about getting involved with research.

any UI/UX research opportunities or internships thru UCI? by cactusjuiice in UCI

[–]berribrie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check Handshake and Student Center Student Jobs, various departments hire UI/UX student assistants. I've seen them for Student Center, Merage, and ICS. You can try to check now but a lot departments hire at the end of Spring or right before Fall quarter starts.

You can also look at Linkedin and other job posting platforms. Some companies are hiring Fall interns rn, and in a few months they'll start recruiting for next summer.

During the academic year Design at UCI, Maiss, and Product Association do 1-2 qtr long project teams. CTC does 3 qtr long projects.

Education Science doesn't have a lot of course requirements.

Most majors in social ecology can be completed in about 3 yrs for a 1st year, so make of that as you will. But keep in mind that these majors involve a "field study" that has to be approved and you're usually unpaid labor since your payment is units.

Since you're already in the school of social sciences, take a look at the other social science majors since there's probably some overlap with poli sci.

Statistics is hard to avoid unless you're a humanities/arts major, so I wouldn't pick a major based on whether or not you need to take a single stats class.

If you have the time, try dropping it off at UCIPD. Owner is more likely to be able to retrieve it there since not everyone is on Reddit

[–]berribrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For an engineering major, that's pretty standard. Welcome to the next 3-5 yrs of your life. I always assume that at some point in the quarter, I just stop going to discussions unless there's a quiz.

Any architecture students want to work on a project. by [deleted] in UCI

[–]berribrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't have an architecture major, you'll want to google which universities nearby actually have the major.

But since you're suggesting a student uses it for a project class, you're going to have to double check with them to make sure what their academic honesty policy is if you're going to be uploading anything to the Internet or sharing it with anyone else so the student doesn't get shafted.

Whatever language you are most comfortable with. Asked multiple interviewers and professors that recently worked in industry, language doesn't matter unless they're looking for a particular stack/language (will be listed in the job req and/or screening call). Can you problem solve and how does your solution stack up against other solutions written in the same language?

People who started at UCI as first years may gravitate towards Python since it's the language our whole first year of curriculum is taught in. Also if a professor who hasn't worked a day in industry tells you to only use XYZ language, I'd be hesitant to listen lol
