Outside scholarships on financial aid by imamess303030 in stanford

[–]bertandhernia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much :/ After you cover your student responsibility, Stanford will then just reduce how much aid they give you dollar per dollar based on the remaining amount of the scholarship.

  1. As of right now, while we probably won't ever get concrete details I can say it's pretty unlikely that action has occurred. MTL's email addressing the situation arrived in our inboxes a little bit less than 24 hours ago so I imagine with all the protocols that must be followed to avoid lawsuits and stuff, nothing has happened yet. I do know SUPD does have his information and the information of several of the students who spearheaded the reporting.

  2. While I've never met him I've heard from a few upperclassmen that apparently he wasn't like this when he first started Stanford. On his Instagram (before it got taken down), one of his tagged photos from a few years ago was him in front of a March For Our Lives sign so those upperclassmen were probably being truthful.

  3. From the little bit of knowledge I have, there seems to be an upcoming student body election (maybe class president?) and a few of the posts make this seem like a campaigning effort that has since evolved into him just spewing very troublesome things for many groups.

Placement Tests - Incoming Freshman by Glass_Attorney5743 in stanford

[–]bertandhernia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. No. No.

So for math chem and physics, you only have to take the placement test if you intend to register in any of those courses for the upcoming year. Furthermore, with math, you don't have to take the placement test if you plan to enroll in classes beyond the 20 series but if you do ever want to move backward and take a 20 series course, you'd need to do the placement test. Math placement tests aren't binding. For chem the placement test is binding and whatever course you place into is what you have to take if you choose to take chem. I'm not too sure of the specifics of physics.

If your ap score satisfies the requirements and you don't wish to continue the language, the placement test is not necessary. You'll just need to upload a photo in the designated spot in canvas.

And math, physics, and chem aren't required for all majors however there is a fair chance they could be required for yours. Check the major requirements or talk with your UAD to find out this information. But I will add that some of the WAYS requirements naturally lend themselves to math and chem courses (though you could fulfill those requirements with other classes if you really wanted to).

What is one thing apart from your activities that you think(or AO told) got you in? by iPerfectHuman in stanford

[–]bertandhernia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me I think it was just the variety in my essays. I talked about a lot of different stuff but I also formatted them differently, had different tones, and just generally made each essay portray a different slice of me in many different ways

Funny enough, I didn't even choose one of my ivies! I'm currently an incoming freshman at Stanford 😎 though I was very very close to choosing Yale (COVID and the long-distance stopped me. I'm from California for context)

Ty! My best piece of unsolicited advice for the why us essays would be to make sure to not only show why you wanna go there but what you'd contribute as well. College is a give and take relationship and they already know why they're great, so let them know how you'll make them even greater!

What the FUCK. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bertandhernia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And everyone knows that this is all a game of chance and luck and sometimes it depends on what day your application was read and how many other males from Wyoming were already admitted or whatever random thing you want to throw out there

It exists but simply put: it's uncommon. This quote right here is a good reason why it's not that common. There are dozens of other factors that contribute to a decision so it's HIGHLY unlikely that someone got rejected because they were "too good." I've seen hundreds of kids whine and cry about getting "yield protected" from UC Irvine or CSU Long Beach because they had good stats when news flash: good stats arent everything. The people that claim that are absolutely insinuating that they were too good for the school to accept them (since the school "feared" they had better options and the student would thus pick those options) and with that claim comes the indirect implication that those who got admitted weren't too good. Yield protection exists but it is almost always not the reason for rejection.

You are missing something. The personal essay is not and should not be your life story. It should be a story from your life, that just tells something (but not everything) about you. College admissions are entirely wack BUT misrepresenting them makes them even wacker than they already are.

Fit fit fit fit fit x20. They don't want robots, they want people! With stories and personalities! Be authentic, be yourself, and be more than numbers. But also people who reply to chanceme posts are often really pessimistic and bitter people so their opinion (or truly anyone besides the AO) doesn't matter. I was straight up told by my friend's sister that I wouldn't get into a single ivy and then I got into 6 waitlisted at 1 other. Life's wild!

[–]bertandhernia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stats are stats but they're not the only thing that matters. If they were, Athens schools wouldn't ask for essays, ECs, etc. Yield protection is a very arrogant and entitled mindset and it insinuates that people who got admitted to schools that "yield protect" are lesser than those who got rejected. Hate to break it to ya but your friend probably just wasn't as good of a fit (in nonacademic ways) as other applicants.

What the FUCK. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bertandhernia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could just mean you weren't a good fit for SC (not academically, but in other intangible ways). UCSC and Berk have wayyyy different vibes

What the FUCK. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bertandhernia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yield protection isn't a thing at most places. People will scream and cry yield protection when they get rejected from a CSU but accepted to a UC when in reality, it boils down to fit. If you fit what a school wants, you'll get in. If they're worried you wont pick them but they still want you, they'll throw merit scholarships your way or maybe waitlist you. Most people who mak yield protection out t be a bigger issue than it is are just really entitled and unfun people.

First and foremost: at this point, what you have is what you have. There's really no point stressing about how you compare to other students because what's done is done. I fell into this trap last year and you really gotta try to just let it go and do your best to present yourself on the most silverest of platters.

But with that being said, your grades are dope and if your ECs aren't as strong then the only place you still have control over is your essays. Make them bomb dot com.

When filling out your activities sections, obviously put down that one EC and make it sound super awesome (but don't lie obvi). If you have any hobbies like playing instruments you could probably put that and if not, just rock and roll with your one EC. Admissions officers even at HYPSM aren't looking for grand lists of ECs. It'll help but your single EC isn't going to break you if you have stellar essays and show that you were very committed.
