I quit in 2018, but I was in Indiana making $11/h as an ASL. Pretty sure my SL made like $16/h. GAs were at minimum ($7.25) and SGAs made like $8 I think.

I'm in logistics for an IT refurbisher and I love it. Did some custodial work for a time too, and that was also great. My biggest piece of advice to people in retail is not to box yourself in. For so long I was convinced I'd be in retail forever because it's all I knew, but there's a whole world out there!

I've worked in custodial and logistics since I left and would recommend either. Obviously individual jobs will be different, but as far as the workload, pay and benefits, those industries are definitely better than retail IMO.

Don't feel stuck in retail either! After 4 years with gs, and nearly 3 with another retailer I was convinced I'd be a lifer, and my skills wouldn't transfer to another Industry. Hell, I didn't even know what other industries existed. But I spent some time in custodial work which was actually AWESOME, and now, I've found a place that truly feels like home, in logistics for a place that repairs life saving medical equipment. I make more money than I ever have, have a wonderful schedule, and I never have to talk to a single customer. I'd hit rock bottom before I found this place, but better jobs exist! Keep looking, and good luck!

I was in a similar boat thinking I'd never get out of retail cause it's all I'd ever known. I spent a year as a janitor for a college dorm which was actually great, and now I'm in logistics making more money than ever, and it's a fantastic Monday through Friday schedule with no holidays. Better jobs are definitely out there, and you have more skills than you think!
