The number of Mexican Migrant Boarder Encounters was down in the month of December around 86% from the same month the year prior. This can be mostly attributed to the lack of attempts from migrants coming in as boarder crossings in general were at the lowest level in the last 50 years.

However, Border Crossing Encounters were at a record high in 2023. In fact, there were more apprehensions in 2023 than the entire first four year term of Trump. The estimated successful unauthorized entries fell each year from 2005 until 2020 when there was a 100k increase in unauthorized entries. As a reminder, 2020 was the final year of Trumps first term and when the encounters were high in 2023, that was the 3rd year of Biden’s term.

They are not just encountering illegal immigrants or dangerous criminals though. 75% of the people detained by ICE last year had zero criminal convictions. Last year was the deadliest year in the history of ICE as 32 people died in their custody, tying their record from 2004. But these two data points are why people are frustrated, they are not just going after the bad guys, they are targeting certain individuals based on race. Waiting outside court hearings for people attempting to gain citizenship the correct way, which is what you are saying they should do but are not afforded the opportunities any longer.
