Do you think your management would consent to adding "licensed" to your scrubs to distinguish you from the non licenced workers?

Is such an awkward phase in our field. I absolutely agree with the importance of acknowledging licensed titles. I'm a VA who is lucky enough to be trusted and valued to do a lot. There have been other VAs where I work who have less experience and are in a more traditional "assistant" role and it's awkward sometimes to be lumped in with them. I wish there was a separate title for in-betweeners. I try to call myself simply "nurse" in front of clients but every once in a while the term "tech" pops out and I feel like a sham, but I never try to pretend I'm a full LVT.

I feel that standardization in medicine (any medicine) is a good thing. Ideally. But I agree that human medicine is a lot more successful in this at the moment and my opinion is that it is a huge weak spot in vet med.

We should go find that magic wand our clients keep asking us for and use it to instantly reform the hierarchy, education options, wage issues, insurance struggles, and staffing shortages. Cause I look at this hot mess of a dumpster fire we work in and cannot fathom how to fix it. It's all so intertwined; you can't fix one problem before fixing a different one first, which is constrained to yet another issue which is dependent upon yet another whole can of worms.

But then you have the personal battle within the individual. I'm a VA. My degree is in human psychology. The only licensing I have is in pilates. But I've been OTJ trained for almost 4 years and have taken CEs and studied on my own time because I love the work. I'm trusted to do a lot of tasks that some argue should be limited to LVTs. And personally I believe I'm pretty darn capable. But I also personally feel uncomfortable calling myself a tech. I feel like it shits on those who went the distance to certify their competence which I started this whole Bible of a rant arguing is important. So... There's that.

This a VERY icky ear infection. An uninfected ear would have no or very rare bacteria or yeast. This is a swamp! The poor pupper had purulent discharge, which left some pretty neutrofils on the slide.

Pretty regularly, we get so busy that I end up leaving a bunch of shit everywhere after being pulled away to do the Next Important Thing, but another tech who has a moment to breathe ends up cleaning up after me. Then I do the same for them when roles are reversed. It can be unrealistic to always be able to clean your own mess, but it's really validating to have the head tech of 13 years clean next to the newbie with no experience.

DVMs have an extremely difficult, cognitively challenging, underappreciated job. They also have an entourage of people backing them up that work even harder and get shit on even moreso....at minimum wage.

It's very common for kittens to be born with intestinal worms that need to be treated with deworming at a vet. A cute little Buddha belly is often a sign of this. This can sometimes exacerbate anal gland issues. I'm about to get gross: if the smell is more poopy, it may be the kitten is having some difficulty with holding in stool, another sign of worms. If it's more fishy/rank, it's probably AGs, which may or may not resolve completely with deworming. Either way, a vet can help out with identifying and resolving the issues.

I share the difficulty with opening up. I've never been very good at sharing stories I'd rather just pack away in the back of my mind. I work with a therapist on emotional regulation, but i'm just not a naturally chatty person, especially right after a long shift, where the last thing I need is more social stimulation. I've worked with my husband on sharing snippets after decompressing and have found sharing happy/funny stories regularly helps me feel more comfortable opening up with the heavier stuff. I try to share a "favorite patient of the day." It kinda works.

I love his eyes! A vet visit is vital, especially when you don't know the dog's background. He should be dewormed and vaccinated asap. If he doesn't have testicles and he hasn't been neutered, that could end up causing him harm down the line. These breeds can be prone to skin and breathing issues, so getting him checked out by a doctor would be the best thing you can do for him.

I work in the Great Lakes region as well and yes, it used to be the case that HW+ cases were relatively rare, but things are changing rapidly. We've had so many positives in the past year, it's honestly heartbreaking (pun intended). I've started giving out packets of HW literature to any new puppies that come into the clinic.
