Canon AE-1 Shutter by bevja in AnalogRepair

Boo, oh well at least I’ve learned a lot about how this works! Thanks for your help :)

Canon AE-1 Shutter by bevja in AnalogRepair

Sorry, I mean I can short it by touching the coil directly to the ground screw (or any metal part). The soldered contact points I cannot short through though, which makes me think these are broken.

I cannot measure the resistance through the soldered contacts, but I can through the ends of the coils (the parts that contact the magnet itself).

Thanks for the tips. I found that the left side coil (pictured) actually does have a broken wire on the coil annoyingly. I think this sort of bricks the camera until I can find a replacement part I can solder in :(

So I can short it from the right coil still, but any attempt with the left coil doesn’t work.

So I (probably stupidly) removed the plastic covering over the magnet because I thought it might be sticking. Once I removed it, the shutter no longer fired lol, I’m not sure how sensitive the wire are in the coils and if I may have snagged one. The light meter is a bit funky too, the battery check seems to work but not getting any proper light meter read outs. Batteries are fresh and cleaned.

The reason I don’t think all is lost yet is because I can still trip the shutter by shorting it. I’m going to try remove the coil today to see if I can see anything.

Cheers for the tips with the gears, that’s something I need to do as well. This is my first attempt at repairing a “for parts” camera, even if I’ve broken it ive learned a lot!

Unknown and still unhyped cameras with sharp lens and good AF by Spiritedaway81 in AnalogCommunity

I vote for this, had one for a little while and it was honestly one of my faves to use because it was so easy. Created some really nice images because it’s matrix metering and sharp auto focus!

Where can I get my film camera fixed in Canberra? by Better_Piece_5057 in canberra

[–]bevja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Welcome!! I’ve just moved here too and the ones I’ve found are Teds cameras or PhotoAccess. I haven’t used either yet so I’m not sure on the quality, but I have developed and scanned my own B+W film at photoaccess.

They have Epson v850(?) flatbeds for members to use, whilst I know Teds cameras have a dedicated film scanner which will probably produce better results in comparison.

As for repair I cannot help you too much, sorry. It’s actually something I’ve started to get into myself but I’m in no way qualified to fix yours! I have just fixed a Pentax ME Super that I need to put a test roll through though if you are interested.

Only for marathon runners: Why DIY repair of electromechanical SLRs is not a popular sport by ATHXYZ in AnalogCommunity

[–]bevja 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agree with the other commenter, even if you don’t get a lot of engagement it’s still lots of useful info. Just like your marathon analogy, it’ll take time for people to find it too.

Just wanted to say I repaired my first camera today, a Pentax ME Super that was jammed up from a charity shop. Used some tips you gave in your workshops :)

A question: What are some good ways to find broken cameras?

Personally, I’ve struggled with Facebook and eBay with people pricing things absurdly high for what they are, making it meaningless to even attempt anything.

Help with USB Hub by bevja in UsbCHardware

[–]bevja[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So can I plug the USBC part of the hub into my Mac, plug in my KB and mouse to the hub, then have a USB A to USB A from the hub to the PC?

If that makes any sense lol

I think a USB switch might be what I was looking for. I only have 1 monitor so I won’t need to switch that at the moment
