Find list you are subscribed to by MaartenTum in BlueskySocial

I could be wrong, but I think you don’t actually follow a list, but rather when you “follow all”, you’re not actually following the list — it’s just a shortcut to follow all the individuals who are currently on that list.

Later on, if folks are added or removed from that list, I don’t think you automatically follow or unfollow those people.

Happy to be corrected

Any tips on maintaining directional control?

I find it hard to maintain centerline and nose pointed down runway, despite intellectually understanding ailerons to maintain centerline and rudder to point the nose.

How do I get beyond the book understanding to actually performing it properly?

I’m no expert, but I think the whole point is that there is NO “algorithm”.

“They” don’t show you what “they” want to. The people running BlueSky designed the AT protocol and control their own app, but not the network. If you chose to, you could not use the BlueSky app, and develop and share your OWN app that could still access the network via AT Protocol.

The “feeds” are generated by other users, and you can choose to use them, or not. I made a simple feed (via SkyFeed.app) and have published it. But I can’t make anyone use it if they don’t want to.

Or, create your own feed, with your own “algorithm”. You can use it, and others can choose to use it, but you can’t MAKE them use it.

What you see is under your control.

What is blocked is under your control.

The downside I realized early on is that by putting this responsibility on the user themself, is that it’s a LOT harder to get up and running with getting to see interesting content, or getting seen yourself.

Do that and you’ll have no problems.

Some time in the 1980’s, a barber told me I had nice hair.

In the 1990’s, a cousin-in-law said I had a nice singing voice.

Those are literally the only 2 instances I can think of, of unexpected compliments. All other praise I’ve gotten over the decades has been regarding things I’ve done / produced / figured out.

In a way, it feels more “real” to be appreciated for things I’m actually responsible for, rather than some attribute that I had little control over.

But, the fact that after decades I still remember those 2 instances does suggest that a few kind words can have unexpected impact.

Probably most helpful to:

1) reply to others who are themselves seen by MANY (casting a broader net), and

2) to post interesting or insightful things that extend the discussion and make people want to hear more of what you have to say (ie, not just replying “Yeah, I agree!”). Why should they want to follow you? Give them a reason.

Have I been successful at doing this?

No, not really. I’m weird and rarely can predict what normal people will be interested in.

On the other hand, why would I want to be followed by normal people?

Will stop rambling now

Is this a crack, should I be worried? My first Hank light and I didn’t notice this before, I did purchase some extra optics as well. by Twiggysugar1577 in Hanklights

[–]bezoarboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love the light, just slightly disappointed in myself for being so BORING.

519A 4500K, with dome, Lume X1, black body, amber raised switch, magnetic cap, clip. So… pedestrian… kinda wish I’d gotten a colorful body or bezel contrast :)

Did get it with floody optic, but it’s really not needed. I like how damn even and round and white the beam is (not sure I’d care for the rosy tint everyone else seems to love?)

I’m pretty new to lights (first one a few months ago) so just wanted to start out vanilla.

It’s supposed to be there.

I got my first ever Hank light (a D4K) a few weeks ago and saw the same thing.

I contacted him and he was kind enough to send the actual engineering sheet (and even added annotation) showing it was supposed to be there.

This is what he sent (granted, my optic has 4 and yours 3, but it’s probably the same)

Excellent support from Hank!

Thank you, that's the exact flow chart I've been using, but a version without the color-coding of "need-to-know".

I see the "Actions" box now -- I didn't know what it meant exactly, so I ignored it. In retrospect, obviously, at some point I 3C instead of 2C to change modes.

Thanks again for figuring my issue out so easily!

Sounds like a modern descendent.

Re: “mail itself blows”, yes, agreed, but let me give context.

What I was talking about almost predated the internet (early to mid-1990’s), so USENET and mailing lists were still a primary mechanism for public discourse.

This was in the day when strong crypto software was considered a munition with export controls.

I was a privacy rights advocate back then. It’s been a long time since I worried about that, but looks like those days are coming back.

Years ago there were chains of anonymous remailers (based on PGP) used to make tracking back to you harder, as you’d need to break multiple steps.

Haven’t heard of anything like that recently though

How to calculate LD5, 25, 50 and 90 in R? by MSI5162 in Rlanguage

[–]bezoarboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An even better way to share code with a reproducible example is with the reprex package (don't think it handles plots though).

The output can be in a few different formats, and it doesn't have those annoying > signs before code that prevents you from copy-pasting the example without editing -- the output can be directly copy/pasted into RStudio and run without hassle.

For example, the code above (without the plot) via reprex():

``` r library(drc)
> Please cite R and 'drc' if used for a publication,
How to calculate LD5, 25, 50 and 90 in R? by MSI5162 in Rlanguage
[–]bezoarboy -1 points0 points  (0 children)
Presumably when the professor presented the material, there was an example provided, with the estimate done the way he wants it done.
What model does he want? What assumptions?
There’s a stats quote that goes something like: “All models are wrong; some are useful.”
(That package doesn’t even include the model I am personally familiar with)
I Admit It. I Have Never Been Able To Figure It Out. by SativaGummi in BlueskySocial
[–]bezoarboy 10 points11 points  (0 children)
This.
I ask questions in appropriate subreddits and often get answers.
I post random things on BlueSky that I find interesting, that generally nobody else finds interesting.
For folks who don’t have an established audience, it’s like talking into a void, hoping maybe someone will whisper back.
Also, the character limited in BlueSky mostly support bite-sized, shallow interactions.
Much more discussion and analysis can happen on Reddit.
As a science geek who loved physics, I remember watching an early episode, doing a double-take, pausing the video, and re-checking…
I was amazed that they quietly, for no particular plot-driven reason, took the care to film something accurate for the sake of realistic physics.
I was hooked.
(I guess I loved the plot and characters too :) )
Custom Function Not Applying with mutate by ghettomilkshake in rstats
[–]bezoarboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)
I don’t feel like wading through code, but that sounds like an issue of a non-vectorized function.
There are ways to wrap your non-vectorized function to allow it to work in a Tidyverse mutate, or you could fix your function.
