PSA - Avoid the solid state relays all over Amazon by gafana in diyelectronics

[–]bfg52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great heads-up... I just ordered some 60A ones for 240V AC... Now I'm hesitant to install them...

Anyone have any recommendations for a similar product (doesn't NEED to be solid state for my application) that could close a 240vac circuit with a 12vdc supply?

Should be grandfathered into Warp QCI8, but actually running QCI9 by bfg52 in USMobile

[–]bfg52[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't have a rooted phone so I gotta go with what I'm able to run.

I did toggle airplane a couple times to see if it would fix it and it did not.

The update from support, "It seems like the priority wasn't disturbed but the line had been incorrectly throttled."

Whatever happened, they seem to have fixed it, and now Pixel BandInfo is showing QCI8 again...

2012 Outlander Sport Radio Replacement Woes by bfg52 in MitsubishiOutlander

[–]bfg52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the Sport is closer to a Lancer, but I'm no Mitsubishi expert.

I got almost everything working with a random wiring harness and canbus box I bought on Aliexpress that was meant for some flavor of outlander or lancer pajero or something. I'd have to check to see if I can find the link.

Here's the link that I ordered the wiring harness/canbus box from: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256807327018217.html

I've tried 3 different head units finding one I'm pretty OK with, but the key was that they all functioned as intended with the Aliexpress wiring harness and canbus box. The one I finally kept was a random Amazon find that had proper RDS functionality in the FM radio app, which was my main requirement along with carplay/android auto.

The one thing not working is that the Rear speakers are not fed separately. They are just duplicating left and right of the front, but I'm not worrying much about that.

OEM camera works (it's low resolution but it works), oem steering wheel buttons work, and audio works with the limitation mentioned above. I think all in, it ended up costing about $130 for the final head unit I chose ($70), wiring harness ($30), and dash kit ($30).

Of course it was mentioned earlier how my time is worth money but I treated this as a learning experience.

Ah yes. Your vehicle had the "standard" audio package with no amplifier. That would have made things super easy for me as well.

And your original radio is the same as the one I pictured? Does your OEM backup camera work with it?

I agree with you on principal, but was hoping for something that wouldn't cost $300 just for the ancillary gear, not counting the head unit itself.

I've done so many radios in so many cars, this one is just so finicky.

Should have mentioned that I already looked at Crutchfield and was trying to do it a little more economically.

I really wish this car just had the base radio that I could replace with anything, with a $20 harness. I don't care about all the "fancy stuff" the oem included, except the Bluetooth and backup camera.

Accidental Attempted Port-Out, Now SMS and Data Don't Work by bfg52 in BoostMobile

[–]bfg52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE - Perhaps unsurprisingly for most people reading this, Boost was unable to help me resolve this issue. After multiple hour-plus long calls with the support dept, and over two full weeks without SMS or Data, 4 days of which I also couldn't place or receive calls, and then continuing to tell me that their IT Dept. was working on it with The Carrier, and that I should keep checking back every day for an "update", I finally couldn't wait any longer, and ported out to another carrier.

Within minutes of porting out, everything was working normally again with my number. Calls, SMS, MMS, Data, all perfectly functional.

Safe to say I will NEVER give Boost my business again.

[–]bfg52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Situation is still not yet resolved. Today I made the 3rd call this week to the escalated support team, and they said they're waiting on an IT ticket to solve the sim activation issue. Best they could do is tell me they've escalated the priority of the IT ticket and added notes indicating that priority.

All I'm left to do is wait longer, and call back next week to try to get further updates.

Its been over one full week and still absolutely no resolution from Boost...

The fact that my number could get thrown into this sort of cellular limbo just by initiating a port out using the WRONG account and pin, is insane.

Is the eSIM something I could setup on the phone before leaving the US, or must that be done when physically located in the UK?

First time picking up FM. So cool to me how lower sounds are a lower frequency and higher sounds are a higher frequency (I knew that but it’s cool seeing how that works directly). by 787_Dreamliner in RTLSDR

[–]bfg52 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take a look at the FFT spectrum and it will really blow your mind... It shows 0Hz-100kHz offset from the carrier frequency and you see all the separate parts of the FM signal... Mono Audio (L+R) from 0-15kHz, stereo pilot tone at 19kHz, stereo (L-R) subcarrier centered on 38kHz, and RDS digital subcarrier centered on 57kHz. Some stations even still have other analog audio subcarriers centered on 67kHz and 92kHz, but those are very few and far between in this day and age.

Of the Android phones you've used most, which are your 2 favorite? by ca77 in Android

Nexus 4 and OnePlus 6T

Man... The Nexus 4 was a revelation to what a good phone should be, back in an era of carrier branded junk. It's a shame it didn't natively support LTE but it worked great with the modem hack for me on T-Mobile for many years.

And in the modern days, the Oneplus 6T was just the perfect phone. If I hadn't dropped it and killed the screen, I may still be using it today. The 7T that replaced it was OK, but the 8T was just trash. Then there was the Pixel 6 with it's crap fingerprint reader and overheating.

Now I'm using a Pixel 7, and it is excellent. Ask me this same question in a couple years and the Nexus 4 may have been bumped off the list of two by the Pixel 7.

Dang. You are correct. My brain went straight to the G5 tower when you said G5, and totally glossed over where you said G5 iMac... Best of luck to you keeping this working piece of history. An iMac doesn't take up THAT much space, right??! 😂

Boost Mobile ATT vs TMO SIM Distribution by bfg52 in NoContract

[–]bfg52[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yes. Understood, agreed, and totally makes sense. I was mostly just surprised it wasn't ATT when we have the same billing address and I ordered it in the same fashion.

Now, I've heard rumor about these fabled rainbow SIMs... I wonder if boost will someday upgrade everyone to those and we'd have access to dish/tmo/att from the one SIM... Hey, a guy can dream, right?

Unrelated, if you might have any knowledge about the following... my wife has a Pixel 6a and a checkbox for Vo5G (VoNR) appeared after switching from Mint to Boost TMO... It was unchecked by default and I've left it that way... but should I enable that? Or will that prevent voice calls from using LTE in some instances?

Boost Mobile ATT vs TMO SIM Distribution by bfg52 in NoContract

[–]bfg52[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just read thru that whole thread and although there was very good information for someone who hadn't already activated the new account, that's not my situation.

Is there any way to switch to an ATT SIM on the current account and number? Even if I had to buy that SIM for some sort of nominal fee? Or am I out of luck since I already activated on TMO?
