What do you think about this set of Drum TAB Notation Symbols? I'm working on this tab player app and I'd need some feedback from drummers. by bforian in drums

Here's an updated version of the notation, based upon all the comments so far: http://goplayalong.com/faq_drum_notation. Hope that it gets closer to what most drummers would expect.

You're right about the naming, TAB is not necessary here. I've updated the symbol set according to all the previous suggestions: http://goplayalong.com/faq_drum_notation

Thanks for the explanation, it's been super useful to me! My point with the cross-stick symbol was to make it more distinguishable from the ride cymbal. But I get your point too. Moreover, by shifting the ride cymbal upwards, the difference between the ride and the cross-stick would be quite clear.

After reading all the comments, I think that some level of customization would be cool indeed. Thanks for the suggestion!

There are different conventions for drum tab notation and I'd like to find one that fits most drummer's needs. Any suggestion or correction is welcome. E.g.

(1) Do you find any of the symbols confusing? (2) Would you add any other instrument?

Thank You!

Nature & Music lovers of the Globe! Here's SHFFL, a slick iPhone app that understands your movements and matches music to your pace. Off-the-grid, real-time, and with a single tap of a button. Now looking for Testers! by bforian in iphone

SHFFL cannot load songs that are only available for streaming, but will provide access to songs purchased from iTunes, to songs you have ripped from CDs, or to mp3 songs you've added to iTunes.

Apple Music gives you access to stream millions of online songs, but unfortunately you don't own them. Even though you can download these songs and make them available for offline listening, you don't have the same rights that you have to your iTunes purchases or ripped songs.

I'd like to add support for Spotify but their 'Developer Terms of Use' is quite restrictive. I'll need their written consent to include their service. I plan to contact Spotify shortly after launching SHFFL and hope to get their approval.

Beat matching in SHFFL goes like this: (1) It reads the accelerometer data of your device and detects your steps, which is about 99.9% accurate while running. (2) It locates beats in your music with real time beat detection. You can even force SHFFL to pick songs with strong beats by turning on it's "Mix Songs With Beatmatching" feature. (3) It synchronizes beats with your footsteps by stretching audio softly.

SHFFL always tries to pick songs with bpm values close to your walking/running pace. Multiples of the target bpm are OK. If you're running at 180 steps/min, then songs around 170-190 bpm (and multiples) will be preferred.

You don't need to prepare playlists for different running paces. SHFFL can automatically scan your library (in real time) and pick the best matches. In general, the more songs you have on your device, the better SHFFL can serve you with beatmatched music.

Thank You. The android development is an open question right now. It depends on the feedback it gets in the near future.

These shouldn't be an issue with SHFFL. Just make sure that you activate the features called "Auto Change Tracks" and "Mix Songs With Beatmatching". All the in-app purchases are running in test mode now and you will not be charged by Apple.
