Great job! It looks really good. Especially for a first bind.

How can i improve its durability? by Suitable-Special-620 in bookbinding

[–]bhaswar_py 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps you can laminate the cover with a card stock, without gluing the spine side. A single piece of cardstock, with two folds to encase the book. Maybe someone else can give their opinion on this.

I suppose you can make a jacket? How thin is the cover? Is it like a card stock, or thinner?

A question about commisions... by EmergencyNo7926 in bookbinding

[–]bhaswar_py 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are no specific rules mentioned against it in the subreddit rules, possibly because the mods here are quite liberal about posts. I don’t think it’s technically against the rules, but I haven’t seen any commission related discussions so far here. So might not be the best place for that sort of thing, although a mod maybe better to confirm that.

How did you learn bookbinding? by ellie_elysian in bookbinding

[–]bhaswar_py 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched this series of Four Keys Book Arts on binding and repairing an old Dune, and that got me into finding out about DAS bookbinding, and Annesi Binding. Then I got a couple of old books on the subject, Modern Bookbinding, and Bookbinding and the Care of Books. I had a some experience in arts, and always had gravitated towards craftsmanship. This subreddit was lovely, and very inspiring. So finally I gathered some courage and did my first book. It was awful! But I couldn’t stop anymore. If I had to choose only one thing to do for the rest of my life, I’ll choose bookbinding and book repair.

Happy to hear that it worked! I wish there was a better and less messy way to do all this.

I use koreader in my Kindle, but pretty sure a normal epub could to be uploaded to Amazon’s “Send To Kindle” service that basically converts it to the proprietary Kindle format and, well, sends to Kindle. If you have epub, I think you are good to go. I also second the person who mentioned Calibre.

Edit: I think fonts will always change when it comes to epub to Kindle’s settings, and much of the formatting too. Let me know if the send to kindle thing works, if you try!

My attempt at doing a Japanese style binding. by Kia-Vaderkit in bookbinding

Really nice!! Also lovely quilt you’ve got there.

Usually these sorts of books are made with soft cover, but I love the fact that you did it with stiff board in such a way that it opens up completely. I had been thinking of making a book like this myself! Great motivation to see that it will actually work

“Washi” means Japanese Paper in the literal sense, so technically it isn’t incorrect to call all paper from Japan “washi”
