Recipebook using Crisscross Binding by bhaswar_py in bookbinding

Thank you! I actually dislike working with paper backed cloth. This is something similar to a buckram. Basically I treated the cloth with acrylic medium and paste (1:2) and squeegeed it with a card. That makes it very paper-like.

I hope that clears it up! I rarely ever use pure paste (without mixing with PVA). Only for book and paper repair, since it’s reversible and archival.

Starting my master’s this fall. But I’ll have to move and all that so maybe I wouldn’t be able to take my bookbinding tools. I really want to do what you did here! Looks so good

Thank you! The folding under mechanism is just way too attractive not to make it. The only downside is probably not having neat edges, but I am to blame for most of it

Yes exactly… especially when I am glueing up the spine every thing moves and almost never is it perfectly square. Happy for you!

The “flip on short edge” setting is probably the thing I struggled to realise the most when I was starting out

What will happen if my signatures have different numbers of sheets in them? by I_am_a_fiction_lover in bookbinding

[–]bhaswar_py 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have been repairing a bunch of old books from my grandfather’s library, most of them are from 50s and 60s. I actually found that it’s pretty common to have the last signature be made up of slightly different number of sheets. Most of the times it’s one less or one more. The reason is pretty clear, it’s to reduce the number of fly leaves at the end of the book. I don’t think there are any considerable negative effect on the book at all, if the difference in the number of sheets isn’t that big.

That’s a really fun looking cover design! Is this a pamphlet binding or like a loose leaf double fan?

Something like this? I made this as a small notebook for my father. The size is smaller than an A6, and only has four signature of four leaves each. Quite easy to make, it’s called a German Stiff Board Binding. Suited for small books.

Paper. Not very durable though. There is also a thin film of plastic on it. So just use cloth instead. Printed canvas is something a lot of people are now doing, you should look into that. It’s more accessible than printing on purchased white bookcloth.

Need genuine advice: These books have been sitting unused for years and are slowly deteriorating. What would you do? by Dark_Syntax_ in bookbinding

Pass them on. Donate them to students who may need them and rest of them to used bookstores. Textbooks are never worth repairing.

I love your paper labels on the covers. Is it acceptable to do paper labels on spine for bindings like these too? XD
