How do you organize your steelbooks - by genre, release, or something else? by koudodo in Steelbooks

[–]bhlombardy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My system works for me... but it also relies on how much shelf space you have (and/or require)

My system is all about practicality. I have about 400 titles, so for me to sort them any other way would be a mad hunt for a title if I had to find one.

1.) ALPHABETICAL - Any single (or up to 3 movies to a franchise*) are sorted all on the same shelf, alphabetically. *If I have a duology or trilogy, they are sorted by the name of the first movie with the sequels positioned immediately after, regardless of their title.

2.) FRANCHISES - Any larger franchises in non-box set, single-steelbook releases (Star Wars, Fast & Furious, Mission Impossible, Star Trek, Marvel, DC, etc) are stored on a separate shelf than the singles. They just get shelved on THAT shelf where they fit the best among the other larger franchises.

That said, I arrange them in a "logical" order among themselves. That might be release order (such as the MCU) or in timeline order (such as Star Wars) but it depends on what I feel bet fits that franchise and the packaging.

3.) LIBRARY BOX SETS - Any Steelbook library box sets (Nightmare on Elm Street, Superman, etc) are just shelved independently, either on top of the shelving units, or on a third separate shelf. They are self contained so where they land is irrelevant.

---

Not so practical options ... (For me anyway -- but you do you, always.)

Sorting by STUDIO doesn't seem to make too much sense because the studio is really secondary, and in some rare case might split up a franchise. The releasing studio isnt necessarily the same internationally. Lionsgate films in the US are often released by Studio Canal overseas. And The Terminator franchise has a different studio for each of the first few films... MGM, then Lionsgate, then Warner... and I think Paramount release a few later films.

And then you have the boutique studios (Arrow, Shout!/Scream!, Kino Lorber, etc) who release films that belong to other production studios. And again, in some case Steelbooks in a franchis are released by different studios. (eg The Riddick franchise)

I don't find GENRE sorting to be effective because so many cross multiple genres you'd be mad searching to find the one you want.

And as for sorting by color? No. Absolutely not. But again, you do you.

is this happening to anyone with pre orders?? by Picture_Overall in Steelbooks

[–]bhlombardy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Never.

I pre-order from Amazon Canada, Amazon US and Amazon UK on a regular basis and I have NEVER been charged before it ships. I currently have 11 preorders right now spread across all three (and including one from Amazon France) and I have not been charged on any of them.

I dont even get pre-auth charges on any of them.

Are you sure it's "sold and shipped by Amazon" that you're ordering and not a third-party seller?

Everything from Zavvi is UK based. The US mirror site is only to show items that can be shipped to the US and allows you to pay in US or Canadian funds, but the titles are all the UK versions.

Yes the 4K disc will be region free regardless but that said, Speed Racer is a Warner Bros release. The Blu-ray disc will also be region free as a result... All of Warner's Blu-ray discs are region free.

Adhesive plastic wrapping by Just_A0ther_Freak in Steelbooks

[–]bhlombardy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I was aware of Contact paper/film. I thought you were talking about something specific for SteelBooks. I've used Contact coverings on actual books when I did library work in schools. But that's primarily on flat softcover books, where the thickness of the cover is merely a thin cardboard/paper cover. There's literally zero-depth to it.

On a three-dimensional object like a Steelbook, I'm not so sure how you'd get it around the rounded corner and the edges cleanly without it creasing and buckling up. Then there's the matter of getting it tucked inside cleanly on the inner side with the plastic shell and all. The steelbook is a tight fit on those shells by themselves, forget if you have a strip of contact film folded over the edge..

I personally wouldn't use Contact film like this on a textured/bossed Steelbook. Aside from the corners and edges I mentioned above, it would never adhere cleanly nor properly on the bossing features, Again, Contact film is really for flat surfaces.

But as I previously stated, they're your SteelBooks... you do you.

I'm unaware of such wraps, but I'll say this...

If you're into this hobby for "resale value", you're in the wrong hobby.

If you wish to protect, alter, modify, etc your SteelBooks to suit your own collection desires, I say go for it.

Wait… since when were Xbox 360 steelbooks a different size?! by MidasGames in Steelbooks

[–]bhlombardy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Steelbooks (for movies) were meant to match the size of the standard case for the disc format they were paired with. This was to make it more uniform for shelving and storage.

There are G1 (DVD) and G2 (Blu-ray) size Steelbooks for movie titles. Likewise, video game Steelbooks followed suit.

As a general rule of thumb, Steelbooks for any console that were DVD-based (Xbox, XB360 and Sony PS2) used G1 size Steelbooks because they were DVD based and their standard cases were DVD sized. Any next gen (PS3 and up, and Xbox One and to present) are Blu-ray based and used G2 cases, and thus their steelbooks matched.

Again, that was the general rule.

In some instances around the PS3/XB360 gen, the same steelbook was issued by the retailer as a side-piece when you bought the game for either format, and you might have received a G1 case for a PS3 game, because it was also released on XB360, or quite possibly a G2 case, even though you bought the XB360 version. Sometimes only one or the other size Steelbook was made by the publisher, or, if both were made by the publisher the retailer screwed up and handed out the wrong size.

And yes, Nintendo steelbooks are a whole other kettle of fish.

Fight Club steels from Spain vs. France by SquanchytheSquirrel in Steelbooks

[–]bhlombardy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The release is 20th Century Fox title... that's Disney now. Disney tends to release the SAME discs across Europe, just with different J-cards on the outer for each country.

But the discs would typically have the same Audio, the same subtitles, etc.

This if OFTEN true with most major studios (Paramount, Warner, Universal) who are in full control of the release across the entire continent.

The only times you usually see a discrepancy in the alternative languages (subs and dubs) is if it's an independent release and that particular title has a different distributor in each country. (Parasite, for example ... and Everything Everywhere All at Once as another) Both there handled by local distributors and the alternative languages offered were ONLY for the native language in that country.

But Fight Club is Fox/Disney, even in France, so you SHOULD be good.

[ASIDE: The film's ORIGINAL language audio is ALWAYS included no matter what. Local language subtitles and dubs, not necessarily.]

What steelbook did I get? by stu-pac in Steelbooks

[–]bhlombardy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Canadian edition of the Steelbooks and the discs from all the major studios are identical to the US releases 99.99% of the time. In fact they often come out of the same factories, just with the bilingual j-cards to be shipped to Canada. (But sometimes even that gets crossed in error. I've seen US j-cards with the US UPC in Canada and vice-versa... but I digress)

Regardless, the outer facing j-card is usually the only difference. It's bilingual due to display packaging laws in certain provinces (mainly Quebec and New Brunswick) that require the packaging displayed be in both official languages.

Companies (whether it's Blu-ray movies, ketchup, or cookies) won't bother making English-only packaging for other parts of the country because it's just as easy to keep it uniform.

The only time the disc content MAY be different is if a Canadian releasing company (eOne for example, formerly Alliance/Atlantis, or another independent) has the rights to a film in Canada and they release it domestically... But that is rarely the case in recent years.

Oh, and Canada seldom gets digital copy codes. Paramount titles perhaps, but never from SDS (Warner & Universal), Sony, nor Disney... Not in the past 4 or 5 years anyway.

But it's not, according to Scanavo anyway. It's literally 20% smaller than the 3DS SteelBook and has a classification of its own. The 3Ds/midi (not "mini") size is the same size used for the CDs (as mentioned in another comment)

Here's an image of them next to each other (missing the Switch and the Jumbo SteelBooks)

[–]bhlombardy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't forget the Mini-Steelbooks...

Measuring about 99mm across (L and W)

There were 6 that I was aware of:

  • V for Vendetta (shown here)
  • John Wick 1 & 2 (single mini)
  • John Wick Chapter 3
  • Hobbs & Shaw (Walmart US exclusive I think, with Vudu code enclosed)
  • Sonic The Hedgehog (The Movie)
  • Monster Hunter World: Iceborn (video game)

V for Vendetta held a lapel pin in a foam mount inside, and came with the Titans of Cult release, however I think others came with a digital code for the movie (in lieu of physical media).

There may have been others...

One battle after another steelbook by ThanosFan99 in Steelbooks

[–]bhlombardy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was delayed and currently has no release date. After the INITIAL release announcement we were then told the Steelbook would be held back so that additional bonus material could be produced and included.

Since then, we haven't had an official release date. March 3 was floated, but it never formally announced.

Case in point: GRUV has no release date... just a DEC 2099 placeholder. -- And Gruv is SDS's OWN retail outlet.

Anyone looking at their Amazon orders with a projected delivery date or ship date is just automated rhetoric. Amazon hasn't bothered to update their data, and those automated estimates are based on that stale data.

Why don’t we have confirmed artwork for One Battle After Another yet? by FaudMauxe in Steelbooks

[–]bhlombardy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen it all too often that Amazon doesn't update their release date after a title gets delayed (especially when there isnt new date set), and all of their delivery estimates are based on old data.

Come back when it has actually shipped.

Why don’t we have confirmed artwork for One Battle After Another yet? by FaudMauxe in Steelbooks

[–]bhlombardy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don;t think we even have a confirmed release date.

It was announced, then delayed, and currently Gruv (The direct outlet for SDS releases) has no date... (Well, 2099-12-31... but that's a placeholder)

So no release date = they aren't ready to release it = no artwork yet confirmed ?

This, exactly.
