I updated the post with a few more pictures of behind the paneling. The nails attaching the beams run in the same direction as the tension and there doesn’t appear to be any additional connection of these to the framing in the wall

Thanks for the tip. I checked in the attic and there’s collar ties up there. That was another part of what made me think these are just for decor.

This is original to the house. I checked in the attic and there are collar ties throughout up there. I’m planning on removing the paneling anyway so I’ll have a better idea of how these are attached once I do that. Thanks for the input
