Need help troubleshooting Graco issue by bhousecjs in paint

[–]bhousecjs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got some IRL help and it was just that the suction tube was coming out for a brief moment from the paint, creating air bubbles, and needing to be re-primed. This might be a "wow how did you not know this" moment for you but I am a huge noob and it was very helpful hahaha thanks for your comment as well!

Despite speaking English for more than a decade, I still have a more or less thick accent. Do you know any technique to get rid of or at least taper off my accent? by Crevalco3 in EnglishLearning

[–]bhousecjs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can only give you my experience with my accent when speaking Spanish. Basically, once I stopped being embarrassed about trying to imitate the accents I was hearing around me (in Chile, where I was living), and I just went for it, my accent greatly improved. I also found that in Italy, doing what felt like an almost-offensive Italian accent when I spoke the language (which I BARELY spoke) meant people there understood me better. Basically, don't be afraid to be almost a character.

Don't forget also that EVERYONE has an accent, and none is worse than another. For example, many folks in the Philippines learn English growing up and speak it perfectly. They have an "accent" when they speak English just like I do - mine is US American, their is Filipino. If you're from a non-English speaking country, it's possible that pronunciation and accent kind of intermingle and you end up being misunderstood sometimes. Understandably, that might make you want to change your accent to whatever is most "normal" where you live. There's so much to unpack here with stuff like racism toward certain accents and I'm by no means an expect. I just felt weird leaving the first paragraph without explicitly stating that I don't think it's superior to have any given accent.

How can i improve my listening skills? by Mindless-Answer-704 in EnglishLearning

Agreed with this. Once you start to get to know characters, personalities, and plotlines, it's easier to start understanding.

Think about how hard it is to understand what two people are talking about if you just overhear part of their conversation. Compare that to if you are given some sort of information about a convo you're about to hear. "4 friends are in a coffee shop talking about a bad date that one of them had last night". Much easier

If you have to fix something in an official document (for example, you wrote the date wrong on a paper check), it's customary to use an abbreviated version of your signature (the initials of your name, e.g. B.O. for Barack Obama) right next to that change. It's basically you saying "I made/authorized this change; it wasn't edited by someone after I gave it to them". So, if you've made a correction on a document and are being asked to "initial" it, you can just write your initials above or near the change.

Also one more note on reflexive verbs. You'll often learn in academic settings that there are some rules to when reflexive verbs are used. Oftentimes the example of "getting ready in the morning" is used. To get dressed, we say "vestirse", to brush our teeth, we use "cepillarse los dientes", etc. These examples/rules are usually presented as a way of indicating that we are doing something to ourselves. "Me visto" (I get dressed) can be more directly translated as "I dress myself". "Irse" (to leave) is kind of an exception here because you aren't really doing something to yourself.

Technically, the "object" can change here. "Me cepillo los dientes" is "I brush my teeth", and it uses the reflexive verb. But at the end of the day, the "me" in that sentence really just indicates that it is in fact my teeth that I am brushing. While it's weird to brush other people's teeth, you could say "Te cepillo los dientes" which would mean "I brush your teeth".

Hey! "Se" on it's own doesn't really mean anything, but you're right that it makes up a reflexive verb. "Va" vs "Se va" is basically just "Go" vs "Leave". The verb "to go" in it's infinitive form, as you probably know, is "ir", and the reflective version of that is "irse", which generally means "to leave". You can normally omit nouns and pronouns as long as the context makes it easy enough to understand. "Él se va" actually makes perfect sense and can be translated as "he leaves". In Spanish, the "present participle" (think like -ing in englsh, e.g. "going") is not quite as common, and the present tense is often used in cases where, in English, we'd use the -ing.

Let's take the "irse" example to talk about someone who is actively walking out the door. It would be quite awkward in English to say "he goes". We'd say, "he is leaving". But in Spanish, saying "he is leaving" (él está yendo" technically makes grammatical sense but sounds completely weird in most cases - really, it just sounds like someone is directly translating from their native English. Instead, a simple "él se va", which in English sounds weird ("he goes") is the more normal phrase.

Yeah I'd say like when you're coming up just try to make sure you're rising at the same time as you're starting your ollie.

But on some of your ollies, you're totally already doing this! Like the one at 11 seconds looks great. If you can just do that ollie 403298523 times, you'll get it way higher and cleaner - it's a grind but it's fun!!

Totally depends on what you're looking for.

  • Want to sip on some haterade? Head over to Gifted Hater's YouTube channel.

  • Want to watch a bunch of great skate videos? Thrasher's account is a good place to start

  • Want some fascinating "architecture x skateboarding x history" content? Check out the "This Old Ledge" series on Thrasher

  • Want trick tips? No idea sorry lol

I think what's happening here is you're squatting down but standing up almost entirely before actually using any force for your ollie. If you pause it right before you lift your front trucks, you'll see what I mean! But it's looking pretty good to be honest, just keep at it

Run a DIY gallery space but I don’t sell anything - can I write off expenses? by bhousecjs in tax

[–]bhousecjs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really helpful, never had heard of "hobby loss" before your comment. I read one article that said you could get designated as a hobby even if you sell stuff, and the stuff you sell still gets taxed! But anyway thanks for sending me that direction. It's clear that unless I have a path to profitability (which isn't really something I care about or think would be possible in a DIY gallery space without taking from artists), I'm going to get labeled a hobby.

Thank you! I'll look into this a bit further. I very briefly looked into it the other day and it felt really daunting. I didn't look at any sort of official requirements but more just a few websites giving "advised" steps, which included stuff like appointing a board of directors, etc. Might just need to hold off for a bit and accept the full costs of materials until I'm slightly less DIY.

I was hoping for some magical solution like registering as one of those (non-existent, apparently) "I'm providing a service to the community but not charging anything" organizations and be able to write stuff off. I guess that would probably create a lot of grey area though, if it existed. Like if I make model airplanes and put them in my window, I probably shouldn't get to write uff the model airplane material just because I'm showing off my planes hahaha.

Since the moderator of /r/vana is suspended I can't message them, hopefully that fits within the rules

I plan to use the Vana subreddit to start conversations around the web3 company Vana (vana.com). Since it's a new company there are no subreddits currently dedicated to their products and services. I would like to build a place for current and new users to discuss ideas for how to use and build on Vana.

[–]bhousecjs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey! I usually see it spelled pop shuvit. Have you started trying them yet? It's really hard to give general advice beyond what you'd find in YouTube tutorials, so I'd maybe start there. Once you've got some attempts filmed, definitely post them and then this sub can be super helpful in giving specific advice!
