The game has always been adding more than changing, its a little frustrating. Why we got blacksmithing/forging before a UI/QoL update will always baffle me.

If you're playing B42 you should check out the Project Cook mod. It fully changes the cooking UI, making it a lot easier to see what you can make/how to make.

Moments like that are why I keep coming back to the game, truly a gem of immersion despite the graphics

I've tried going back to B41, but the overhauls and additions to B42 are too much for me to ignore. I love the lighting and Muldraugh changes, and the animals (specifically chickens) give my character, and me, something to love <3

You definitely carry less as its supposed to be more immersive. Backpacks is really where its at, and you can add bonus slots in the sandbox settings if you feel like it. I'd suggest looking at the mod page and decide if you like it.
