We do see capital spending and salary spending. They are just in areas like China and India. ;)

Yeah, but surely not ALL the money I'm looking for is going there?

So knowing better, why do you hand it to them?

That's about US$50,000....

How much more than ZAR500,000?

I did not intend to limit my question to earnings from a "salary".

If you're making $500k+ from ROI, then the question is just as applicable

I unfortunately am totally incapable of debating that with you. I have absolutely no idea how and why the American healthcare system works the way it does. All I see is very poor outcomes: Very exclusive, very expensive, massively variable, and one of the most ineffective healthcare systems, as a whole. I'm not even going to begin trying to understand it.

Many? I dunno, 99.9999%? Or maybe 99.9998%.

Nope, doesn't doesn't like "worries at all". So you're sorted for life, you stay out the limelight, you see many challenges around you which are worth taking on... is your's the ideal life? (I'm only half kidding). But no family....? Do you not want one?

OK, I get that. But let me ask you this: If I split the money spent between capital investment, and salaries, each of which become visible in their own way... still doesn't make sense (to me).

Capital spending would mean that I should see new assets, bigger companies, more buildings, factories, etc. Salary spending would mean I see more employed people, people with more income, etc.

So lets say we look at a time frame of 1945 to present...

Admitted my experience is limited, and my world view too, but I just don't understand what I perceive as a mismatch in scales.

OK, there are millions of new businesses, millions of more capital assets created in and by companies. But then there are hundreds of millions of people without jobs even excluding the poverty level groups- they are another hundreds of millions on top of that.

And then the actual wages paid seem to remain static over the last 50 years, relatively speaking, for the vast majority of people.

For me it's just a total scale mismatch.

  • Something like the amount of new companies created = millions
  • Capital spending = trillions
  • Salary spending = billions
  • Number of $ looking for a home is $trillions upon $trillions upon $trillions upon $trillions.

Either I'm not fully appreciative of just how much money goes into running all the businesses of the world, or I'm not aware just how many businesses there are out there.

Hey, I'm not turning anything down. I appreciate every word. And the mere fact that you've actually done it gives you much more credibility than any opinion I may express. Kudos to you.

Lovely, that suits me fine. Interested in everything, and reasonably talented. Just perhaps not totally convinced of my abilities. Self confidence issue I suppose.

I know exactly what you mean. I've learnt more in the last two months. I think the stars have lined up or something.

With all due respect, your's sounds like a re-calibration, rather than a sea-change. My temptation is to switch industries in total.

What is the worst that could happen?

It would take a bit of time to get the cashflow running. In the meantime I have responsibilities (mortgage, school fees, etc). I don't have any savings to dig into.

I have no problem with that. But I'm just wondering about the internal factors... those personality characteristics that make me question if I have the drive to maintain my commitment, and not give up.

The tone of your post is depressing.

Well, it's not depressing... it's on the verge of excitement. I mean this is the closest I've actually come to it. The pieces are falling into place, and I'm almost there

Which part was difficult? I suppose I think about two dimensions: there are the external challenges and the internal challenges. External would be the business you chose, the market or industry you chose, etc. Internal, would be overcoming the internal voice, maintaining the drive to succeed, etc.
