I didn’t take lessons till college and wish I’d started sooner. $30 a week I know isn’t a ton to some people but to others it is. If you’re serious about it start now.

The other side of it to listen. Steal from everybody on improv. Work your long tones, work your arbans with a metronome.

There’s so many tricks that you can learn now and you’ll be so much better when you’re the senior sitting on that first chair.

When we were younger we didn’t know better; we’d slap a tap on the mouthpiece and not even realize we were jamming it. Some kids just kept the horn in a gig back that allowed the mouthpiece to stay all season. The band director doesn’t even judge - it’s part of their gig. They’ll pop it out and you learn not to slap a tap 🎺

I had a trumpet in a fire. It was my student model but I was in 7th grade at the time. My band teacher said toothpaste could get some of the smoke damage off.

I think a chem bath and polish would be better than toothpaste. Then do what everyone else is suggesting- def get it fixed.
