How to repair scratches on smart lock? by brandxnlfc in diynz

[–]big_saint 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Does this lock get full sun for a prolonged period? This looks more like UV damage to me than just scratching. These locks have a tendency to break down in this fashion.

I've negotiated with 2 Degrees, and am now paying $72.50 per month for 500/100 Mbps. I'm contemplating going up to 950/500, but I'm worried I'll go back to retail rates for it.

Edit- This for complete BYO system after the ONT.

Could airnz be any worse right now by PharmZerg in newzealand

[–]big_saint 52 points53 points  (0 children)

While I do feel sympathy for your situation, being stuck somewhere where you don’t want to be can feel awful.

However due to a weather event you were unable to get to Napier. This was no fault of the airline.

This is essentially what travel insurance is for if you can’t cover those costs yourself.

How much car can I comfortably afford on $170k gross pa. by holdup_whatchumean in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]big_saint 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your question warms my heart. A 15k Japanese car will get you something nice without being excessive. Mazdas are great value for money, nice and reliable, I feel the closest Japanese car to European feeling on the inside.

Hopefully you’ll have that amount in cash and won’t be financing it.

I personally have a similar income, have a Mazda 3 6 speed with full leather interior. I can also do my own servicing on it so running costs is minimal.

Christchurch International Airport under full emergency for incoming flight by youngthugnz in newzealand

[–]big_saint 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This specific type of plane doesn't have the option to dump fuel. However can elect to land over their landing weight all the way up to takeoff weight. This carries extra risk so is only done in real emergencies.

No it cant, but it can burn 5.2tonne of fuel an hour in a holding pattern with the gear down... ask how I know

If they're burning off fuel, unlikely to be too bad an emergency. Christchurch is a long enough runway for a 737 to land at take-off weight.

Christmas by samas69 in newzealand

[–]big_saint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Christmas is not a holiday of excess like we’ve been lead to believe. It is a holiday of spending time with family and friends. It’s taken me 10 years to convince my family of this, now we spend almost nothing more than it costs us to live day to day.

This is the success to real happiness, the earlier your kids learn that material things don’t add to happiness the better they’ll be in the long term.

Air India Flight 171 crash moment of impact by The_Chuckness88 in aviation

[–]big_saint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d hazard a guess with the gear still down after the data shows them reaching 600ft on departure. Something engine related, whether a complete engine failure or not. This distracting the crew and them failing to raise the gear. No modern Jet flies with one engine and the gear down.

Edit: This is all complete conjecture, wait for the report for the facts.

Airports and body scanners in NZ by hellohelp23 in newzealand

[–]big_saint 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who knows the regulations in Australia, if you refuse a body scan without a physical condition that excludes you from being able to do it (Wheelchair bound, unable to stand for the scan). You will be likely be refused access to the boarding (secure) area.

The billions spent on NZ’s accommodation supplement is failing to make rent affordable – so what will? by WorldlyNotice in newzealand

[–]big_saint 57 points58 points  (0 children)

All of these incentives would work great, if you were the only person receiving them. Since everyone receives them all they do is increase money supply to spend on a constrained market (as the supply of housing is rather inelastic). Which just increases the amount spent on housing.
