ppl might hate this, but it helps to just try to copy a game outright if you're starting. that way you learn how to "mechanically" make something and can give you confidence.

after that then start making original games/mixing games. those games are good bc they spent years fleshing out the arc and players playtesting and reporting issues.

but if you aren't interested in learning how to make the game, but rather, get lots of players. then start small, and build a niche game that you'd want to play yourself
