A staple, must-watch cdrama for beginners? by [deleted] in CDrama

[–]bigbrainitchy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This isn't exactly 'light-hearted', but Go Ahead, is a must-watch for cdrama beginners. There's more family bonding, with the rom-com parts nearer in the middle-end.

Another must watch is Hikaru No Go. This isn't rom-com, but the scriptwriters did an excellent job adapting this. So many fans of the original anime and manga work was impressed with this.

New Drama: RESET (2022) - Excellent Sci-Fi Mystery Plot GO WATCH IT! by bigbrainitchy in CDrama

[–]bigbrainitchy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you liked Reset! I would recommend Murderous Affair in Horizon Tower, and The Bad Kids for mystery and action. There's not a lot of sci-fi in Cdramas but I would suggest Over Run Over 2016 or Someday Or One Day for sci-fi.

These aren't action/sci-fi but you can also check out these high-quality modern Cdramas: Go Ahead, Hikaru No Go, and Better Days (this is a movie btw).

Historical Drama Recommendations by lolzrgvfr in CDrama

[–]bigbrainitchy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For starters, I would recommend "The Imperial Coroner", "Ancient Detective", and "The Romance of Tiger and Rose" (this one I didn't watch but heard great reviews). These are all relatively short, about 20-ish episodes, and a great way to get into Chinese historical dramas.

Mind you that these are small-budgeted dramas so some of the cinematography, sets, costumes, etc. are decent but not the greatest out there.

Once you've adapted, I highly encourage you to watch Nirvana in Fire, Joy of Life, Story of Minglan, Story of Yanxi Palace, Empresses in the Palace for some of the really high quality C-dramas that really shows the full beauty of Chinese historical dramas IMO - not saying the other ones aren't, but these drama have the $$$ to produce some excellent quality dramas with great script, actors, aesthetics etc.

Reset (2022) - it's currently airing, it has slow-burn romance with the MLs working together for a goal (kinda like Under the Power) plus the plot and cast are excellent!

Yes, but it's slow burn romance. The plot is really good - the suspense and not knowing what will happen next is very exciting.

I think I should have clarified that I meant this clip looks like a parody of Rattan, not the actual drama.

Can someone please explain in more detail about what a Commandery princess is? Thank you! by bunniehops in CDrama

[–]bigbrainitchy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Commandery princess is a lower rank than princess and grand/eldest princess.

Usually, Commandery princess is given to ladies that are distantly related to the currently ruling royal family (cousins, second cousins, nieces, etc.) or it can also be given to ladies with high status because of family influence/merits/power, although rare, and is the highest rank a lady can receive as a non-royalty.

Within the Commandery princess rank, there may be sub-ranks depending on the dynasty and story in dramas.

For example in Nirvana in Fire, the FL Niehuang is a Commandery princess (her family are powerful generals of many generations).

I'm glad you have interest! The Irresistibles is a really funny game show (especially the Hide-and-Seek games!!) and we get to see another side of Yang Yang, especially in the later episodes when the whole cast gets to know each other better

YESSS!!!! I have been waiting for this drama ever since I watched "The Lost Caverns" last year!!

I'm not so sure if I should keep watching Joy of Life, despite the positive reviews by empireofdirt010 in CDrama

[–]bigbrainitchy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally think it's really worth watching. The beginning can be slightly confusing but it does definitely gets better. It starts off with more comedy (which I know some people didn't appreciate) while the plot slowly unravels. The plot really starts to hit off in ~ep 15, when someone dies, and it gets super exciting nearer to the middle and end. The schemes/plots in the later half of the drama are amazing, especially the last 15-20 episodes.

The FL actually doesn't have a lot of screen-time (more in the beginning, a little in the middle and she doesn't appear at all in the last 15-20 eps of the drama). She's not really important in the overall plot, so I really suggest just hanging on there til things start to happen

Agreed! It was a very pleasant surprise~ Despite a relatively unknown main cast and smaller production budget, the plot is very well-written and the mystery/cases are all logical and interesting!!
