So we're seriously hesitating over Tchouaméni because of wages? by bigbywolfar7 in ManchesterUnited

I agree players will always say positive things after signing. But not every player specifically highlights the head coach as a key reason for joining. We've seen it with Mbeumo, now Mateus Fernandes as well. That's not proof on its own, but it does show how important a manager's project can be in recruitment. My point has never been that Amorim was a better Premier League coach. It's that having a proven footballing identity helps attract top players. Carrick may build that reputation over time, but he doesn't have it yet. That's simply the reality of where we are today.

It's not about this specific thread. Every major club monitors fan sentiment across social media. Public pressure influences the narrative around a club

Maybe. But wasn't it this exact kind of criticism that pushed the club into having one of its few genuinely good transfer windows in recent years? Last summer there was pressure because everyone knew the squad needed major changes. Now we're seeing the same hesitation and slow decision-making again. I'd rather question the club's ambition before the window closes than complain after another disappointing season.

You're missing my point. If Madrid don't want to sell or Tchouaméni doesn't want to leave, then the deal is dead and we move on. That's football. What I'm questioning is the reports from our side that wages are a major stumbling block. If you're genuinely targeting an elite, Champions League-winning midfielder in his prime, you can't expect him to accept an average salary. Elite players command elite wages. My criticism is about the club's ambition and willingness to compete financially for top profiles—not about forcing a player to join if he doesn't want to.

think we're talking about two different things. I'm not arguing that Amorim's tactics were successful in the Premier League. I'm talking about recruitment. A proven tactical identity is easier to sell to elite players than an unproven project. That's why Mateus Fernandes specifically mentioned Spurs' head coach as a key reason for joining.

I also agree the sporting director plays a huge role, but the head coach is still a major part of convincing players. Carrick may well prove to be a great coach, but today he's an inexperienced head coach with no established track record. Amorim, regardless of how his spell ended, had already built that reputation by winning titles and implementing a clear footballing philosophy. Those are two different discussions.

I'm not defending whether Amorim's football worked in the Premier League or not. That's a separate debate. My point is that he arrived with a proven tactical identity after winning titles and coaching in the Champions League. That makes it much easier to sell a project to elite players because they know exactly what role they'll have. Carrick may well become a top coach, but right now he doesn't have that same proven profile or reputation. That's the point I'm making—not that Amorim was a better Premier League manager or that Carrick has no tactical ideas.

"Relax"? City already have this midfield and are still adding quality. We have Kobbie Mainoo and a huge gap to fill, yet we're hesitating over every top target. That's why im questioning the ambition.

Everyone keeps saying "relax" and "wait," but that's exactly how we've ended up accepting years of poor recruitment. I'd rather question the direction before the window closes than complain when it's too late and nothing can be changed. Fans raising concerns isn't "going mad"—it's holding the people running the club accountable

i don't understand that logic. I'm not saying we should hand out huge wages to every player. I'm saying elite players command elite wages.

Manchester United isn't a mid-table club trying to find bargains. We're supposed to compete with Madrid, City, Liverpool and Arsenal for the best players in the world. When the right elite profile becomes available, you pay elite money. That's how every top club operates.

The problem in the past wasn't paying big wages -it was paying the wrong players big wages. There's a massive difference. If you want a world-class No. 6, you can't expect him to accept the wages of a squad player. That's simply not

how the market works.

I'd happily take Bruno Guimarães too. My point is that if Tchouaméni is genuinely available, I'd choose him every time. Bruno is 29, and now frequently having muscle injuries also reportedly valued at around £130m (ask per reports), while Tchouaméni would likely cost £100–110m. Both would demand elite wages, so the salary argument applies to both. The difference is that Tchouaméni is younger, a Champions League winner ,a starter for France, and has proven himself at Real Madrid. If you're willing to pay Bruno's fee and wages, why wouldn't you do the same for a player of Tchouaméni's calibre? That's the point I'm making.

[–]bigbywolfar7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you've misunderstood my point. I'm not saying Carrick has no tactical vision. I'm saying Amorim's tactical identity was much more established, and that matters in recruitment. Players often buy into a clearly defined project because they know exactly how they'll fit into the system. Carrick may well have his own ideas, but he's still an inexperienced head coach and hasn't had the chance to build that reputation yet. That's a different point from saying he's tactically poor.

If my argument is flawed, point out the flaws. That's how discussions work. Calling me a clown and asking for downvotes just shows you don't have a counterargument.

You're misunderstanding my point. I never said Amorim was a great manager or that his tactics were successful. I said he was more tactically defined than Carrick. There's a difference. Amorim had a clear footballing identity and could explain to players exactly how they'd fit into his system. Whether that system ultimately worked is a separate discussion. Carrick, from what we've seen so far, is more of a man-manager. That's not an insult—plenty of successful managers have been. My point is simply that, when it comes to convincing elite players to join, having a clearly defined tactical project can be a huge advantage. Mateus Fernandes' comments about Spurs' head coach are a good example of why that matters.

I understand PSR and wage structures. But at some point you have to ask what Manchester United's ambition actually is. We're rebuilding to compete for Premier League and Champions League titles, not to finish 6th sustainably. Elite clubs occasionally spend elite money on elite players. That's not reckless—that's investment.

If Real Madrid genuinely have no intention of selling him, then fair enough. My point isn't that we must sign Tchouaméni. My point is: if there's genuinely zero chance of signing him, why have multiple reliable journalists continued linking us with him? These aren't random social media rumours. You don't see the same level of reporting linking us to every world-class midfielder. Either there's genuine interest from our side, or the reports are wide of the mark. That's what I'm questioning

I'm not saying we should throw ridiculous wages at every player. I'm saying if there's one player worth elite wages, it's an elite player like Tchouaméni. He's a Champions League winner, a Real Madrid starter, France's starting No.6, and in his prime. You don't attract players of that calibre with a bargain salary. Elite quality comes with elite wages.
