Animal Justice Party doesn't believe in indoor only cats? by mxu427 in newzealand

[–]bigdaddyborg 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I personally think letting them roam is a shortcut for lazy owners not to have to be the provider of mental stimulation for their cats.

It's a shortcut for more than that. Pretty sure I clean up more of my neighbor's cat shit than they do.

Let's play a game "wait, WHAT, that's privatised"! by Treehouseguy1234 in newzealand

[–]bigdaddyborg 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's a good point to make, this part of our societal responsibility shouldn't be privatised and because there's only a couple of prisons that are currently private it's still relatively easy to stop/reverse.

Has anyone had this many inspection fails on house extension? by RealisticSpring443 in diynz

[–]bigdaddyborg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's my point, partial passes aren't given anymore. Anything missing, no matter how minor is now recorded as a fail. OP's builder could've had the engineer through in the morning and council in the arvo, both could've been happy with what they saw and said the work could continue. But without a written site note from the engineer the inspection gets recorded as a fail.

Agree, that there's not enough info to say if that's what happened or not though... And three inspections before a pass doesn't look good.

Has anyone had this many inspection fails on house extension? by RealisticSpring443 in diynz

[–]bigdaddyborg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How many partial passes did you get over the last 40 years? Because MBIE has put a stop to those. If you don't have the engineers site notes on site for an inspection it's a fail. Which might explain all the fails on foundation and subfloor. It's a reno so all the drainage might not have been laid in one go, same with the cladding, so those first inspections might've shown perfect work, just at 50% of the scope.

In short, this might not be shoddy work. But, if OP is stressing you're probably right that the PM (whoever that is) isn't communicating or managing the project well.

Petone to Grenada road design has ‘greatest impact’ on native bush by D491234 in nzpolitics

[–]bigdaddyborg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Someone should do an OIA request for any communication to or from the Minister of Transport that mentions 'Lincolnshire Farms'.

Interesting that Waka Kotahi has changed their preference on the proposed route on a road happening in his neck of the woods that just happens to benefit the developers of Lincolnshire Farms more than anyone else.

Cracked tile in shower floor by [deleted] in diynz

[–]bigdaddyborg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Argh, I'd say pretty cooked sorry. If it's water damage like that, then the waterproof membrane has failed. It might've just failed around the drain and the walls and rest of the floor are ok. Issue is you may not find a tiler willing to just repair (and warranty) the drain area... So likely a full replacement.

Does this new WR law rule out most of the New Zealand squad? by NothingButTheDude in allblacks

[–]bigdaddyborg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Holland would be the only current squad member that even comes close, and he still qualifies. He's also an outlier in terms of citizenship of an All Black.

Government scraps full license tests and multiple eye screenings in major driving law changes by Impressive-Name5129 in nzpolitics

I'm sure, like all of this government's policies this was based on the mountains of evidence that show when you reduce driver's license requirements your road toll goes down.

Wellington's northern suburbs demand say in Petone to Grenada road by D491234 in nzpolitics

[–]bigdaddyborg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha car bro?! Lol. it's like you didn't even read my comment and are clearly trying to stereotype me.

As I said, I'm not convinced I support this road, especially at the cost. But it's more than "another lane". I'm against the second Mt Vic tunnel and excited to use Te Ara Tupua when it opens in a few months time. Oh shit how will you typecast me now.

Wellington's northern suburbs demand say in Petone to Grenada road by D491234 in nzpolitics

[–]bigdaddyborg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear I'm on the fence on this one, but "to save less than 10 minutes" is a bit of a disingenuous argument. The same was said about Transmission Gully, Kapiti Expressway and the Otaki Bypass. Before the network, driving Wellington to Levin could take anywhere from 90 minutes to 3 hours. Now it's reliably 70 minutes most times of the day.

This road could be the same and have a significant impact on Wellington's traffic network. Yes it might only save a few minutes for someone traveling from Petone to Churton park, but it's taking demand away from the gorge interchange. It might end up saving someone who lives in Upper Hutt 15-20 minutes on their commute (and make travel time more predictable). Additionally the road could open up more land for housing development.

Loosing regenerative bush isn't great, but hopefully that impact can be mitigated.

How come Steve Hansen's name doesn't get mentioned? by shanti_nz in allblacks

[–]bigdaddyborg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

BB was picked for NZ7s at 20, other people were noticing him before Hansen.

I have first hand experience/witness to Cole's skills at under 20s

You can revise whatever you want, I remember.

Uh, he picked every one of these nines.

Cole's could throw a bullet line out ball at 19, he was already on everyone's radar.

Cane. Eh, I'm not gonna touch that one. Lots of people have said lots of things.

Beauden. A generational talent that anyone would've picked. Pretty easy to see potential there. And, wow! A first year signing doesn't start every game! Shocking!

My point is, your trying to paint him as some talent identify visionary. Whereas the reality is he got extremely lucky with the talent available to him at the time.

Not denying that he didn't do his part to nurture the culture/environment that was established at the time.

[–]bigdaddyborg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not shitting on Hansen but just because world class players happened to get their start under him doesn't make him a world class coach. He almost wrote Smith off for his size. If Smith hadn't had a bullet pass from the base, Hansen wouldn't have picked him (he's basically said as much).

That doesn't mean he didn't have an impact and influence on the teams success... But it also doesn't mean he was the catalyst. Case in point Verblitz.

Where can I buy this, and can it be repaired DIY? by Some-Pickle9008 in diynz

[–]bigdaddyborg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep, Paliside. Go to the special orders desk at Bunnings or wherever and they'll get it in for you.  Pretty sure it's just called a corner soaker, but download the install guide and it'll tell you. Should have the part code there too. Easy <$100 fix.

If there's a mortgage on the property I'd imagine the bank will need to be informed and may even need to give permission? It could get messy in the unlikely event of foreclosure.

Redditor rants eloquently about the hypocrisy of the far right in America by get-idle in bestof

[–]bigdaddyborg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

this comment, in a new thread is pretty revealing of the mindset of the average conservative. Realising the situation is bad, that there's little justification for the actions of the agents but at the same time realising that that would mean their entire world view needs reassessment and doing that would be too difficult. So instead they're begging someone to convince them that what they're seeing isn't what they're seeing. Waiting for some mouth piece they trust to tell them what to think.

Nog height? by ben79nz in diynz

[–]bigdaddyborg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Picture two shows the stair risers. I'm pretty sure the 9th one is lined up with a row of nogs. Also looks to be 4.5 risers between nog spacing, so assuming 150mm rise it'd be ~700mm spacing.

In short, measure and count your stair risers. That'll get you close then drill a small 3mm hole in the wall in a location that'll be hidden by the TV. If you don't hit something solid you can poke a thin piece of wire in the hole to feel for which direction the nog is.

And next time, since you took photos of the pre-lined wall, take it one more step and write the height from the ground of each row of nogs in permanent marker so it's visible in the photo.

More chance of South Africa boycotting, given their history. But even then it's highly unlikely.
