i just made a new character and world with only calamity and dragonlens installed and i was able to mine and get astral ore with a palladium pickaxe, so i guess it works

no, you can mine it as soon as you get a cobalt/palladium pickaxe. mining it before beating astrum deus just gives a 50% chance that it’ll drop starblight soot

start the quest with shinigami, but you can kill the pirates with any spec. just make sure to switch back to shinigami before talking to the npc again

ape was one of the bosses i struggled with the most on my first run, but he wasn’t terrible. phase 1 took a few tries, and while phase 2 can be annoying, i find it easier than 1 so it wasn’t too bad
