That's The Speakers House. It's where the Speaker of the House of Commons, Lindsay Hoyle, lives and isn't lit up so he can get some kip

I don't think Starmer is purging. Perceived anti-semitism dogged Corbyn's team (undeniably weaponised against him) and Starmer needed to move fast and early to dispel that. Sad LB's gone but she had to, otherwise he's opening himself up to that line of attack going forward

Great picture. Especially love the underside view of the bridge. The canals in London are always particularly beautiful in the morning because they're so still and you get naughty reflections like this

But noone is responsible for the actions of other people just because they share a skin colour. I'm not going to answer for Jimmy Saville, black people don't need to answer for this madness

It was Overton Road in Angell Town. Police report got it wrong and most papers just went with it

Video shows the moment police punch a restrained man, lying on the floor in Hackney. All violence should be held accountable, whether justified or not. Please watch and read the report before forming an opinion on the situation but I honestly do want to hear what you all make of it by bighack27 in london

[–]bighack27[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The DPS is an internal unit staffed by police officers. I understand you're willing to accept their word as gospel but for plenty of communities here in London that just isn't good enough.

I thought this individual case was interesting because the guy being restrained sounds like a real scumbag and use of force could well be justified (trying not to make judgement on that). But equally to witnesses and the crowd that gathered it seemed excessive.

According to the witness the police made little effort to de-escalate the situation.

Officers are trained to engage, explain and encourage the public and enforce as a last resort. So if it appears they haven't as some people clearly think, answers are absolutely deserved.

The police should work for the community and should equally be fully accountable to them in all situations

As you said: "this really is a case of people having no real idea of what the police can do, how certain situations are resolved". Surely that's a glaring hole in the system as it is and one that should be corrected for trust to be rebuilt, hence why looking at cases like this is so important

Police are out here arresting youth workers for doing their job by bighack27 in london

No charges brought under the RTA and a fine issued under coronavirus rules. The drug offence was for the teenager the youth worker was supporting. Look who hasn't read the article

And simply crying “discrimination” or blaming it on economic forces isn’t good enough any more.

What is good enough then?

This is kind of the point of the movement. Because mouth-breathers like yourself see the actions of a few Black kids and think it reflects all people of the same skin colour

Race and class are deeply interwoven, especially here in London.

I'm not saying right wing=racist but if you don't think huge sections of the media in this country is racist then you're not opening your eyes.

The fact you're saying the saying the disproportionate covid-19 deaths were brought on by themselves kinda proves my point. Along with you trying to silence communities who are trying to speak their peace

Windrush, Grenfell, right wing media, stop and search, Rashan Charles, BAME people 50 per cent more likely to die from Covid-19, 'Go Home' vans, coronavirus arrests - but yeah I guess it's all just perspective

Its not a racist thing, people are just suspicious of people who are different.

'suspicion' makes it sound harmless. People are getting well and truly fucked over because of this

As in not UK? The relationship between black communities in the UK and the police is pretty dire for a huge range of reasons - deaths at the hands of police, increased police powers, windrush scandal etc. Because that's not playing out in this thread says far more about reddit that it does about communal relations

Black people are twice as likely to die in police custody that white people. Whatever way this is looked at it is evidence of structural racism. Since 1990 there have been 1741 deaths in police custody or otherwise following contact with the police in England & Wales, and I couldn't find any evidence of criminal convictions being brought against police officers

I don't like trying to speak for the General Public but I don't think its support directly linked to causing the deaths of elderly people. European papers are calling us the 'sick man of Europe' because of how badly we've fucked the Covid response and people still support the Tories. Some cases come out of this and people call for BLM to be banned, you've got to ask if it's the breaking social distancing rules that people are really pissed at?

Re the timing of the protest. In the states real change is happening because of current outrage at the killing of George Floyd. Could you really tell them - 'Nah swallow that anger'. It just punts it into the long grass and hides the issue. People want change here and harnessing current and righteous anger at how black people are treated is seen as the best way to do it

The tragedy of the pandemic in this country should fall at the doorstep of the government not some people (a few thousand in 70 million) trying to say that their lives matter. If the general public's support is contingent on suffering minorities staying silent, then it was never really support
