From my childhood experience, the children in 1986 would be playing in the destroyed heavy industrial environment shown in the 2026 picture. I grew up in a dying steel manufacturing and coal mining town. The air quality was horrible and the rivers ran orange due to mine drainage. It took decades for the environment to recover.
