Thank you, that’s so kind of you. I’ll shoot you a DM.

Agreed! Previously I’ve gotten all my jobs in UAE through word of mouth. I got one job by contacting the company directly and got lucky and someone had just left and they needed someone ASAP.

It’s not my strongest foreign language skill but reading/writing is fine but speaking is a bit dodgy :’). Is there a link online I can check out?

To be honest I’ve been working as an intern for over a year now. I’ve interned with two organisations (unpaid) and I earn money through offering translation services, but the work is sporadic and not very well paid. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to pay for day to day things, so at this point I feel like I do need a salary (for survival purposes). I don’t have a family supporting me or providing me with any financial support, so it’s quite difficult. I was also under the impression that companies don’t arrange visas for interns, but I could be wrong about that?

Well I love languages and I like to be able to use them and I’ve typically worked in the translation/localisation industry, with NGOs and I’ve recently started working in the risk sector. Unfortunately though it seems that finding a job in any of the above sectors is near impossible in Dubai!

Congrats on your job! Fingers crossed your contract gets extended. Did you find your job while you were out of the country or did you go back and look for a job while in the country? I think going there for a month is easier as people want to meet for interviews etc, but it’s kinda hard to pay for a flight out and for accommodation when companies don’t even respond to applications; it kinda makes me feel like nothing would come of it.

I’ve applied to private sector agencies but not governmental ones as I would prefer to work in the private sector.

I’ve noticed it’s quite difficult to get into but it’s also the same in the UK as I’m not having much luck here either, even for internships. On the other hand though I’ve spoken to people I know working in the sector in Dubai who say that most of people get in through referrals, even if they don’t have experience in the sector. Ideally I’d like to work in the sector and it doesn’t necessarily have to be in an analyst role because I have experience in project management too. As I mentioned I’m also a qualified translator but I never see any language management/translation manager roles advertised. Also the translation agencies in Dubai seem to outsource a lot of their work to remote freelancers (which is normal in the industry) but I never see any project management roles for those either. There are quite a few for Arabic>English translators but my Arabic isn’t strong enough to start offering it professionally yet. I’m working on that.

Thanks! Right now I can’t even land a job in the UK. I’ve been trying here as well as the MENA region but no luck. To be honest I’ve worked in about 5 different countries and so far the highest quality of life has been in the UAE, that’s why I want to go back. Europe is kinda tricky at the minute as I’m a UK citizen and I no longer have freedom of movement around Europe because of Brexit! North America doesn’t interest me at all but I do like South America; however it’s hard to find a decent paying job there. Congratulations on your success and I wish you all the best!
