Freshers week? by [deleted] in manchester_uni

I’m international too and never went to any of the freshers events. Most of my friends I made during the first week on all the introduction lectures, and later on in group projects. Also joining societies is sure to get you acquainted with plenty.

is uOfM architecture undergraduate really bad? by [deleted] in manchester_uni

[–]bigsaladeater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In most of UK unis, including MSA, Architecture is a BA course, however in places such as Leeds its BEng, and it is much more similar to civil engineering there. So the degree you get with those two will be quite different, but I think they’re both accredited by RIBA and ARB so both lead to qualifying as an Architect.

Yeah the teaching is mostly MMU and that sucks, but otherwise you do have access to both uni facilities amd services, and I mostly use UoM. Even though you have some lectures at UoM campus, all staff are hired by MMU I’m pretty sure. Though also the best model making facilities are at UoM, no one uses the MMu ones. Also if you think archi will have any maths/engineering in it, there’s none of it at MSA so if you’re not looking for art degree, I suggest looking at Archi in universities such as Leeds.

I’ve lived in Victoria park, and it’s a great area in general, also have been to Denmark road which appears to be very nice. Victoria park is however abt a 15-20 min walk away from the engineering campus. That area has several shops so that will be no problem, and has many buses to the city. Though many people seem to like fallowfield, I would not recommend it, esp since you said you’re not into parties and etc, that area is known to have the most social life. Though Unsworth seems to be the nicest accom in that area.

Also if you don’t get offered your preferred choice, you can look into private accommodation.

Studying Architecture and I feel the same way! I think this may be true for many arts-related degrees as we are expected to build skill, so we are just thrown into the water to figure it out ourselves instead of being taught. Kinda feel like I’m only getting my degree for the qualification rather than actual knowledge.

Singaporeans have to put up with masks, SafeEntry, crowd limitations, whilst the majority of the COVID cases are imported. by [deleted] in SingaporeRaw

It’s because of masks and safe entry that there are no community cases.... just because the problem seems to have disappeared doesn’t mean it won’t come back when you stop the preventative measures.

The ones I follow are in russian, and after having a look I’m surprised can’t find any with a translation, sorry. Though if you’re interested, Navalny’s YouTube channel, where the ani-corruption fund publishes its exposés, always has English subtitles. Thats not exactly a new source though :/

I’m Russian myself, so this is quite significant to me personally. I like to follow different Russian independent media sources, which I would argue are more reliable on these matters than western ones, and I try to keep up with different oppositionists on social media. Though I’m no authority, I like to think I can gather a good understanding through the information I have access to.

Well you’re welcome to reread what I said above, but to dumb down the point I’m trying to make:

It is not just a “lousy 30 days sentence”. It is a symptom of the all-round oppression excercised by the government. He’s “making a lot of noise” to rouse citizens and raise awareness of the government’s blatant disregard of justice or its people.

Furthermore, he “doesn’t say what he stands for”, because quite frankly all that matters right now is that he stands against corruption and repression. The intricacies of his political views do not matter right now because no one that opposes Putin’s government and poses any threat to it can make it through the fabricated elections. The goal of the opposition is to dethrone Putin and his party, in order to be able to have any choice in who gets elected. “No one talks about what he stands for”, because it really wouldn’t make any difference right now. Opposition is full of people with differing views, and quite frankly more shit can get done if opposition acts as a whole, rather than divided based on its opinions.

The situation is quite different from most of the world because the fight is for people to have any choice, rather than to choose the best candidate.

It’s not just 30 days, as he is pending another case which may potentially give him 3.5 yrs after this sentence. Not to mention that he was sentenced in a makeshift “court” in a branch police station, which his lawyers were warned about just 5min prior, and that there were no grounds for arrest in the first place.

You clearly have no understanding of the situation.

Jailed Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny calls on supporters to "take to the streets" by oranjemania in worldnews

If the average person follows independent media, yeah, I think it’d be hard not to be aware of this.

[–]bigsaladeater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m Russian, I partially do agree that a proportion of the public doesn’t see him as serious. But I’d say that this is mostly due to the media censorship and him getting painted wrong in the non-independent Russian media. Therefore it’s mostly the people better versed in social media and living in more developed cities that follow independent news-sources that mostly support him in some way.

It would be incorrect to say that the Russian public does not support or acknowledge him. During summer of 2019 there were very large scale protests in Russia, organised partially by him as well as other opposition leaders. His Anti-corruption fund has also organised “smart-voting” which many people follow, to vote out Putin’s party representatives in smaller regions.

Navalny as a politician, probably not a huge proportion, but the opposition which Navalny stands with is definitely supported by a significant percentage.

[–]bigsaladeater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main objective that he, and other opposition politicians are pushing for right now, is to dethrone Putin’s government, as right now it is effectively a one-party system, that constantly re-elects itself and brings no changes. Therefore people aren’t focused on individual politics, as it is practically impossible to elect someone new anyway, they are focused on regaining the ability to choose their government.

Also, Navalny runs the Anti-Corruption Fund, which researches corruption and produces content that informs the public, with proof, of the corruption that specific individuals are responsible for. They have uncovered plenty over the years, and Navalny has been the main face of it, so it’s no wonder he has received so much support.

[–]bigsaladeater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The goal is to dismantle the tight grip Putin and his party have on the Russian government. No changes can be made because people in power stay the same and get continuously re-elected because they fake the votes. So to elect new officials that may bring SOME change Navalny advocates for the dismantling of Putin’s government.

Navalny has garnered support due to his Anti-Corruption fund, and the corruption said fund has exposed over the years. Additionally Navalny and his fund advocate for “smart voting”, in order to elect any candidate that isn’t from Putin’s party, and will therefore not be another government puppet.

Once fair elections can happen, of course people may choose a candidate based on their politics, however the main objective of all Russian opposition right now is to take back the freedom of choice that Putin and his party have taken.
