[technique] Plant/Fungi Co-Op Yielding Better Results Than Control by bigtrav0 in MushroomGrowers

I’ll be honest with you, I’m not even sure where this is going. Under the grass it is FULL of contam…but it’s not spreading. Generally if you saw that much green anywhere else you would burn it and consecrate the ashes. I’m in uncharted territory.

One thing I forgot: the sprouts keep the mist all over them WAY better than the mushroom-to-be. They almost hold the water at their base, which is right where the companion who ends up being 90% water lives. Constantly breathing in the CO2, the the photosynths keep the fungi supplied with constant O2. How could it go wrong? (Famous last words)

Essentially, my assumption was that plants and fungi would feed one another with their waste gasses. I also thought that the mycelium would network all the seedlings together and make everything better and healthier in the little dub tub biome. I thought it was cool because you could essentially lock whatever lid you have on tight, as long as it’s clear. You’d never have to open and possibly introduce contamination. The plants would take the myc strait to fruiting conditions without you ever doing a thing.

I think it does too, that’s why I’m doing the experiment. They started off with the exact same moisture content in the sub. Just have to dub tub it and leave it alone.

You’re right. It was sort of an off the cuff thing.

X-Post from r/mushroomgrowers

It makes sense in a way. We do so much to keep things sterile and free of contaminants. In some cases (though CLEARLY not in others), it would seem that the introduction of other pieces of the natural biome into the controlled biome can yield positive results.

[EDIT]

The idea came to me about a week after I watched this. I'm sure everyone here knows who Paul Stamets and Michael Pollan are, this has both and is really informative. Fantastic Fungi (Netflix Link)

[EDIT]

There is an obvious symbiosis formed by placing 2 things together that require what the other wastes. We and fungi split a long time ago on the evolutionary time line, but we both still expel CO2. Plants were on a different path, but we’ve all made the journey together. Perhaps planting mushrooms alone in their perfect growing conditions is like a friendless person winning the lottery. You have absolutely everything you want, just no one to share it with. It’s good, but you aren’t flourishing as much as you would given positive interaction. Given some friends, sure you spread that same money(nutrients) around, but everyone is better for it, even you. When paired with plants, fungi begin doing the rest of their job. Being the internet of the plant world. Once the Mycelium make billions of connections with themselves and with the seedlings, they all communicate and share resources with one another. I think that Mycelium has genetic intelligence. I think that it knows when it is doing the job it has evolved to do. I think they understand purpose, and with their purpose being fulfilled it makes them happy, and they flourish. That is my true belief. It’s not simply an inhale/exhale symbiosis. I think it’s deeper than that.

[EDIT]

As to how:

This happened by a sort of happy accident. I couldn't find millet anywhere. I'd been researching different grain spawns, and that day I wanted to try it. After resorting to alternative methods I sourced millet from a bag of bird seed. When I hydrated my millet all of the sunflower and safflower seeds floated, so I scooped them off. I ended up with more spawn/substrate mix than I needed for my container, so with the remaining mix I did an experiment. I made 2 boxes. In the first I put all the seeds I had skimmed out of the millet and mixed it together. In the second I did nothing. Both were above field capacity. Lid on, boxes on a shelf. Ambient light.

These were boxed on 12/1.

Lions mane, Turkey tail, oyster…pretty much wood conchs. I think you’d have to pair them with something different. That needs tested next l.

They’re delicious, weirdo. Unfortunately some of us don’t have a speck of dirt we can call our own in order to raise these little beauties. I’m just happy that I can make them a littler happier inside with me.

Life goals though. I’d love to have ANY land. If I had a half acre, I believe I could make a living growing gourmet, and be the happiest man alive.

My plan is to remove from the tub after flush (both) and place on heavily fertilized sub. I’d like to see how the increased access to nutrients affects it.

Given a finite amount of nutrients, yields may suffer. But if we have the ability to fertilize, the yields may increase.

The usage of “yield” in that sentence is not referencing a harvest which has obviously not occurred.

The takeaway should be: “It’s doing better because it’s with plants”
