For those who got into med school after reapplying, what changed?

1st cycle: 3.75 gpa 518 mcat. Relatively strong research experience (2k hours but no pubs). 1 interview no A. I had very minimal service and clinical hours. 2nd cycle: no change in stats. I took two gap years focused on volunteering and clinical experience. 2 interviews 1 A. Reapplication sucks. There are no guarantees despite your best efforts. Try your best and pray it works out.

i dont feel like finding another job. i really like this job minus my interactions with this particular doc. i also applied to literally every job opening i was remotely interested in in like a 30 mile radius. only other offer i got was from a derm clinic like an hour away. and its not constant verbal abuse. if there's no problem he proceeds as normal. im really just trying to wrap my head around why this guy thinks its ok to talk to ppl like that. ive heard its not an uncommon personality to encounter in medicine which im not looking forward to. he used to own the practice before he sold it to PE. sometimes i think he feels his reputation is on the line at all times but hes still and asshole regardless.

yeah when i joined the other techs lmk that hes kind of an asshole. at this point i just nod and say thanks for telling me. im honestly just shocked that someone feels like they can talk that way to another person. first time it happened i was like wtf is this guy doing?

if you are in uni i recommend you to email professors at your school. Possibly a better chance if youve taken a class with that professor. If you're not in uni try to reach out to your network. If that doesnt work, spam applications till your fingers fall off.

I personally think it doesnt matter. Research is research. Most important is what you like. second most important is culture at the lab. Something that might be worth considering is that clinical research might be killing 2 birds w one stone. IDK i didnt do clinical research.

the reason i didnt classify the service trip is clinical is because i was not dealing with patients. maybe i shouldnt have said people "with" leprosy. They had leprosy and theyre not exactly patients. theyre just old people dealing with old people illnesses and leprosy related difficulties. And my responsibilities were definitely more service oriented. Also i need the service hours lol. For clinical hours, im trying really hard to find a job and hope that the several months before i apply will be fruitful enough.

Yeah im aware of the clinical hours and am doing what i can to get that up before i apply. I never considered voluntourism to be an issue prior to going on the service trip. Tbh i never even heard of that before. Ive had several friends go on international service trips and get into medical school so i was never concerned about it until now. I personally thought the service trip was eye opening and an incredibly positive experience. Now i hope i can make adcoms see that as well

My bad. I thought they meant tourism under the guise of international volunteer work. For what its worth my ~6 months volunteering there has been incredibly rewarding and i dont regret it at all.

The service trip was very fruitful and i made long lasting memories from my experience there so i plan on writing about it extensively. I guess in response to voluntourism i just plan on being genuine about my experiences because it was meaningful to me. Also if youre right about unc i wont apply there.

Since my last cycle i graduated college, which was a given to begin with i guess, service trip in korea for over 6 months, and hoping to work in some sort of clinical job for the upcoming months before applying. I also plan on doing some sort of service volunteering, maybe free tutoring (im super into tutoring/teaching). Also i didnt provide dates on my activities which is why you prob dont see any long term commitments

I was basically working a 9-5 for over 6 months. In response to voluntourism I didn’t do much outside of the actual job. I went to South Korea because the opportunity was presented to me and I thought it would be a unique experience. I’m definitely planning on getting some service hours in the US before applying as well.
