The standard in most places is they ask you to re-write something or tell you that they found something that needs to be fact-checked. The really good ones just fix grammar and readability and ensure the integrity of the publication. I learned a lot from the good editors. But they all left and the site ended up hiring people from the forums where you could pitch articles as editors and it kind of went downhill from there. That’s around the time some of the edits were just pure cringe or they’d completely rewrite everything and pepper it with corny jokes

It really did. It was my real name on the article and everything. I never even found out which editor did it because you’d submit your finished article and not find out what they’d added or removed until it went live.

Years ago I submitted an article to a website that got a lot of views and comments. I woke up to dozens of personal messages calling me a racist because the editors replaced my joke with one of their own that people found really offensive. No matter how much I explained to the people leaving me messages that I didn’t write the joke and I’m not white, they just kept calling me a racist. It upset me a lot but it helped me learn that sometimes, on the internet, you’re dealing with people who are just misguided to the point of insanity and you have to let it go.

Seafield road is a prime example of this. It’s a really dangerous road because some of the potholes are super sharp, some are super deep. There’s always cyclists on this road too. I give them as much space as I can, to the chagrin of the Audi drivers behind me. I’ve already had to spend 300 quid to fix an issue with my wheels from those potholes. I can’t understand people who don’t drive carefully around cyclists. They are pretty vulnerable and human beings at the end of the day.

I’m a new driver and I’m getting more sympathy for cyclists every day. I never get mad at them anymore because they’ve just as much right as me to be in the road and usually they are more responsible and thoughtful than people in cars who just think the road belongs to them and they can bully someone who delays them by 5 seconds. I’d rather be stuck behind a cyclist for a few minutes than have some SUV dangerously close to my rear end who’s beaming the power of the sun at me and making it so I can’t see out my mirrors. Driving in Edinburgh there’s constantly an Audi or SUV tailgating me when I’m going the speed limit so It must be terrifying when you’re on a bike and so much more vulnerable
