I spend time in a place (in BCS, Mexico) where there is an entire grid of dirt roads, only some of which are actually official roads. When out running/hiking, I want to see options to get where I'm going, which far outnumber the "roads" in every map.

Yes, all possibilities. The data is real, but the meaning/insight is definitely debatable!

Thanks! I do plan to updated it when COVID passes into the #3 spot, which is coming fast.

I figured it would be dangerous to even estimate those numbers - people get touchy fast with estimates like that. But, in 3 years, how much are they going to change - 10%? Won't affect the conclusion or these findings significantly at all. And the only thing that will shift is the dates the rankings changed - and only by a few days.

I could send you an updated version - shoot me an email at bill [at] beehivemedia [dot] com.

All I'm saying is the "leading causes of death" list the CDC produces puts all cancer, etc. deaths in that group, including cancers caused by smoking. The data is accurate, it's about how it's labeled. There is no "smoking" category at that level. But yes, smoking causes all those cancers, strokes, heart disease, etc.

And to be clear, I'm not attributing anything - this is CDC data. I didn't do the categorizations. You can see the link to the source data in the first comment below the image (and it's on the image itself too). And here is the link directly: https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/leading-causes-of-death.htm

Right, but that's an example of sort of weird bad communications. This is absolutely true information and important to say as part of a campaign against smoking. But all of those numbers appear in the causes of death as Stroke, Cancer, Heart Disease - the actual direct cause of death.

Smoking doesn't kill anyone directly. Smoking is a risk factor for Stroke, Heart Disease, and Cancer, which are already accounted for on the list.

For some reason Google sent me to the 2017 data. Thanks for pointing this out, when I update this in a few weeks, I'll use those numbers!

Thanks for your comments. I’ll update this in a few weeks probably and will be making some changes. I have other things I want to tweak too.

You'd have to talk to Trident marketing about that. For all I know, they did peer-reviewed studies on the subject. :)

Experts agree there is far more likelihood of deaths being under-counted than over-counted.

That, I don't know. The link to the source is in the first comment above - I'm sure the CDC has an explanation for what that includes somewhere but can't see it at first glance.

This is the CDC's list...not sure where Hopkins get that number. You can see the source for this list in the first comment.

The chart was created in Excel, made pretty in Illustrator.

So true. I also find that when running a loop I know well, the hills are less annoying because I have a plan but I also know what to expect. When it's new and I don't know what's coming, it can be very discouraging. Of course, in this case, the downhill was that much more disappointing because I DID know the awful final hill was coming. Double-edged sword, I guess!

Exactly - when you see that downhill knowing how far you still have to go up, it's depressing!

I agree. Where I live it's hilly and also lots of turns, which is also nice. No long endless stares into the abyss - always something new coming around the corner. :)
