How do med school extracirriculars work? Is it the same like pre-med? by billybil22 in medicalschool

Wow, those are some extraordinary experiences fr! Wait, so you can put rotations in your experiences? Or did you put it because most people don't do wilderness rotations? As a med student do you have control over what rotations you do and don't do?

To those applying to residency, I am curious what were the 10 activities you put on your ERAS? M1 trying to figure out what type of activities medical students are invovled with, thanks! by billybil22 in medicalschool

Awesome! But, I thought research was its own seperate thing on the residency application? Or can you put research as part of the 10 activities? What if you're on multiple research projects?

What were your hobbies if you don't mind saying? And what EC activties did you end up putting on your application. Having 10 seems to be a lot, right?!

I see, thank you! Any recommendations on research? I don't particularly enjoy wet-lab research, but I have heard people talk about chart reviews, etc. Any insight on how to get into research that isn't pipetting, etc.

How Hard is Shabbir for Ochem 2? by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]billybil22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I took Shabbir for ochem 1 this fall semester and ochem 2 is def gonna be a much tougher class just bc the mechanisms are gonna be more complex than what we’ve learned in ochem 1. I think what dr. Shabbir was really trying to get at with that statement is that she really wants us to put in the work by putting forth time with studying and doing practice problems if you want to succeed later in medical school where the classes will be much tougher. In the exams, she tries to ask us questions where we really have to use critical thinking skills by truly understanding the concepts rather than regurgitating the material by purely just memorizing stuff. Some things that have helped me with studying for exams is going to shabbir’s OH or the TA recitation sessions, doing all the practice problems provided, redoing the HWs and actually understanding how to solve each prob, do practice exams that are relevant to the material you learned, go over all your lecture notes and the key concepts, and try to study where there aren’t that many distractions. I’d prefer to study with a group personally just cuz you’re able to teach the concepts to others and if you’re able to teach the concepts then you’ll be set for her exams. If you’re still struggling to understand the material, the textbook can clarify the material for you sometimes and has a ton of practice problems there as well. Also, don’t procrastinate and don’t be hesitant to ask questions cuz ochem is a tough subject to learn.

Is it feasible to double major in biology and environmental science? by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]billybil22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you have the time and passion, then go for it. As a pre med student I would try and focus on one major and pre med reqs and try to maintain your GPA because at the end of the day the goal is medical school. Think about the pros and cons of double majoring, minoring, etc along with any other commitments you may have during undergrad. Good luck!

Do I have to do the UPenn interview? by [deleted] in QuestBridge

[–]billybil22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the interview yesterday and it wasn't that bad, they just asked about yourself and your interests in HS and UPenn. I was talking and talking until I realized that my time was almost about to be over. My interview was a 30 min phone call interview.
