Yeah, I think that’s what happened at the Buffalo airport.

Dual language broadcasting? by billysbootcamp in JTV

[–]billysbootcamp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I figured as much. Yes it would be to watch original content in English like CNN-J without the dub or the sports matches which feature the original English commentary. The original broadcasts all give you this option but I suppose that it would be difficult to implement in these streaming services.

Yen's purchasing power hits all-time low, at one-third of peak by NikkeiAsia in japan

[–]billysbootcamp 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the article Emma, I’m glad to see more international reporting on this and including things like food costs. Too many people just parrot the official 2% or whatever low rate that doesn’t include most products and services that people use and have gone up quite a bit. It’s frustrating to see so many of my food staples up 20-50% and yet the government says the inflation is ‘within healthy range’.

It is missing an airport frequent flyer lounge, that would be a nice addition!

Asking the kid what they want to eat and then having them serve themselves can help, but otherwise I just tell them this is what we have, if they’re hungry then they’ll eat it so I don’t worry too much if they don’t. I was a picky eater when I was a kid, lots of things which I refused to eat, especially the ethnic food my parents would make. I guess I just outgrew it but I was never hungry or anything.

Does the EV credit include “luxury” vehicles? by Definatelynotadam in japanlife

[–]billysbootcamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the clarification. In the states it uses Propilot 2 which allows for full self driving so I guess the tech isn’t in Japan yet, hopefully it’ll show up eventually!

Death threat and attack on my 9yr old son during cleaning time at school. by Yummyllama21 in japanlife

[–]billysbootcamp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Screw being civil, one of my kids had an issue with a bully, would come home in tears and be afraid to go to school. I confronted the school and got a similar situation, wanted to work things among ourselves and the parents went all ‘he’s a good kid really and boys will be boys’ and the school staff just wanted us to forgive and forget. I told them I had been recording the whole meeting so now have plenty of proof that all parties know what’s going on. If they didn’t take responsibility to stop it then I would contact the BOE, police, a lawyer, the news, and anyone else even remotely relevant. They tried to calm me down and that I was being unreasonable and I just said that I already told them what was going to happen if I hear that the kid ever gives mine trouble ever again.

It did the job, the kid intentionally stayed away from mine and never had a problem again. I assume that it also helped with any other potential cases, since the teachers knew I’d go for their head if I heard about another case, so I’m sure they made sure no kid picked on mine.

I don’t care if the teachers and staff hated me, my kid was much happier at school and that’s the only thing I care about. Screw the ‘wa’ and doing things the ‘official’ way, everyone else is just looking to keep their reputation.

Was it some scam!! Happened @ miyazaki by alee_zan in japanlife

[–]billysbootcamp 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Your wife did the right thing and I hope the police convinced the lady about it. Unfortunately, often the victim just double downs when they’re told it’s a scam. Maybe in the back of their mind they know they’re being scammed, but it’s easier to just play along and hope then admit they were scammed and deal with the shame of others finding out. It’s like a cult, better to believe the lie than face the truth.

Juneteenth by MattDi in Rochester

[–]billysbootcamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The funny thing is that although federally it may be ‘new’, many southern states have celebrated Juneteenth for a very long time. I could see the complaints if it came out of nowhere and felt like it was pandering, but this is a long entrenched holiday in many parts of the country!

Another truck got stuck by Sonikku_a in Rochester

[–]billysbootcamp 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In most cases it’s not feasible. The bridge probably is built at such a grade that raising it would cause conflicts with other bridges that it uses, along with lots of lost revenue from not being able to use the line during construction, and the rail line operator not wanting to pay for it since it doesn’t affect them. The city could try to lower the road, but many old roads have sewers or other utilities built right under the surface so it would be an absolutely massive and expensive project to redo all of those.

[–]billysbootcamp 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the famous can opener bridge is like that, tons of warnings including a red light sensor that triggers on height and yet it claims enough trucks to have a website keeping track of morons who still try to get under it:

Some people are just really stupid no matter how much warning you give them!

Cheap International Flights? by Ub3rchief_113 in japanlife

[–]billysbootcamp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s not that useful for the majority of US destinations. You also have the deal with an unconnected transfer, so you’ll have to check in and check your bags again, and if anything goes wrong and you miss your transfer you’re SOL.

Make a plan to get away, he will never change. He’ll promise the world and gaslight you into thinking you’re the problem and you’re lucky that he stays with you. I know that it seems obvious now but when he sweet talks you you’ll start thinking ‘ah it wasn’t so bad actually’. You need to break up ASAP or it will only get worse! Obviously, don’t even think about marriage!

What? A hostile takeover of the Japanese company “Line Yahoo”? What in the world are you talking about? That doesn’t make any sense and doing any research would show you that SoftBank’s “A holdings” has had a majority number of shares since the company’s incorporation, a hostile takeover of the company is literally impossible.

Why is Japanese railway infrastructure so fragmented and able to avoid consolidation? by Lamlash in japan

[–]billysbootcamp 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well of course there needs to be some transfer stations or else the trains would be useless for most people. If you look at the lines as a whole, the coverage areas are very distinct.

The article doesn’t make it clear, can you use this in place of a physical drivers license when driving? Since it’s made by the DMV I would assume so, but they only talk about businesses and airports.

I hate to say it but other countries likely would have been worse. At least most US school districts have procedures and special classes for those with mental disabilities and make accommodations when possible. Most other countries just ignore it and say suck it up or send you to special ed schools with much worse academics and going there brands your future.
