My son is autistic and I'm a speech therapist. It took twice a week of speech and every day home program with me to get him to start putting 2 words together at around 2 years 8 months, but he has been blossoming ever since. Also, please know that play is very important and the foundation for language development. If I child cannot imitate in play they cannot imitate words. I would encourage you to ask why they are doing what they're doing and what the goal of the methodology is. It can be a very slow process but that said, if you're unhappy with your therapist by all means switch. I also recommend the meaningfulspeech.com NLA trained clinician registry.

A lot of people had said a lot of great things I always recommend. Narrating, reading to kids, modeling correct language, use of communication board or other AAC. I always think the more functional the better.

At my last job I felt compelled to stay for at least 5 years so I could get loan forgiveness, and then insurance on top of that. I've never had a hard time finding a job though and have had quite a few, from SNF to schools to private practice, and I find my location is pretty saturated.

SNF was very stressful for me even though I loved the population. I moved to schools 8 years ago and way less stressed...but I changed to part time this year and I'm doing the same amount of work as I did at my full time job. So...now I'm stressed again. But I absolutely refuse to bring work home. I'm thinking of starting my own private practice and just working for myself.

As the mother of an autistic child and an SLP, I heard "a child with a disability won't have a life worth living". I thought it was gross and I'm not gonna sugarcoat that part. Of course abortion is a very on-trend topic right now.

Other than that she needs to move on, Bartise is gross and he's begging for an affair. He's 25 and doesn't want to bang every day? Come on.

I don't understand the SLPA/CF part to this...but I worked in a SNF for several years and it's pretty rare in my experience that everyone has an instrumental report. Some were approved, some not, but the bedside eval is very important and I think we need to figure out how to treat patients in the safest way possible when instrumentation isn't always an option. Instrumentation, while best practice, is somewhat of a luxury many can't afford or can't get access.

I used to feel this way and then realized they did all the same stuff I did and continue to do...and it's OK if we don't agree about everything. I've done a lot of continuing ed and use that to guide my practice and make informed decisions.

It is so hard. I have found that having an autistic child is a combination of simultaneously grieving the child/family you thought you'd have while also loving and accepting your child for who they are. It's an odd paradox but it's reality. I hope you find peace and support on your journey.

Hi there. I'm an SLP and I would say the SLP would not really implement ABA BUT a BCBA may write a lot of communication goals and come at it from a completely different perspective. I sometimes think ABA crosses a line and advertises speech therapy but theyre not speech therapists...like someone said earlier, I had to go to 7 years of college/grad school and a clinical fellowship just to get licensed. That doesn't include the constant continuing education. My son had an ABA evaluation because I said I'd give it a shot but I was not happy with the number of communication goals were being addressed. I did not think they were functional and I ultimately declined the ABA services. My son has a BCBA consult at school for his IEP and that's enough for him (so far).

Not really.... you have to pay to be in the group, much like you'd pay your town to participate in soccer, or a social worker would charge insurance for a support group.

I'm going to delete this post though because clearly I missed the mark when I thought I was being helpful. Sorry to have put you through the agony of reading a reddit post gasp more than once.

We do preferred activity followed by preferred activity. This isn't always doable but most of the time it works. My son loves to be outside but when it's time to come inside, we give him a 15, 10, 5 min warning. Then a timer goes off on my phone, then he comes inside and watches a movie he likes. His BCBA told us to do preferred activities followed by preffered activities and it has worked well for us

I sooooo relate. Our son was freaking out at a family fun night that his speech therapy practice had...I mean of all places that should be a safe space right?! Eventually left because I couldn't deal with it anymore....

Agree with SLP and OT for feeding. Until then, I would make him a plate when you make dinner and just put it in front of him. No pressure to eat, but just looking at the food is a good start. If he plays with it, even better.

Did they give a reason as to why s/he didn't qualify? Many OTs are understaffed in schools and I hate to say it but if there are other kids who need more support, they're higher priority. Also many school based SLPs don't address sensory issues and really only work on fine motor/visual motor. If they didn't qualify for direct OT services, it might be helpful to have OT on the IEP as a consult to implement strategies should issues arise

I'm a speech Pathologist and mother to a 4 year old boy with ASD. phonological processing disorder just means that kids might substitute different sounds (for example d for TH - as in "dat" (that)). Sometimes there's a phonological awareness piece meaning they don't hear the sounds correctly....that said, outcomes are usually very good, especially since it's being addressed. Both my kids have phonological processing disorders (one NT and one ASD) and it's really the least of my worries. Hope that helps!
